View Full Version : Bosch vs. OEM BMWs plug
c3incjjc 01-21-2008, 08:59 AM I just read several plug threads and nobody mentioned OEM plugs, only NGK or Bosch.
Are the OEM BMW plugs not as good as Bosch?
The Bosch plugs in my 98' 528i are two prong and the BMW ones are four prong. Which one is better? Or what plugs would you guys recommend?
My car currently has 104k miles.
Thanks, Jody
NNY528I 01-21-2008, 09:25 AM bosch and NGK are OEM
ezbmr 01-21-2008, 10:10 AM My mechanic put in the BMW ones, but then again, they also say Ngk right on the plug???
Alpina540i 01-21-2008, 10:19 AM I think the NGK plugs are the best to go with.
NNY528I 01-21-2008, 10:22 AM mine are Bosch
keefy6 01-21-2008, 12:05 PM I just installed Bosch in mine.
thejlevie 01-21-2008, 12:10 PM I've seen a number of reports of some Bosh plugs loosening over time. The thermal characteristics of the those may not be a good match for the BMW heads.
lilgsx 01-21-2008, 01:58 PM My personal opinion Bosch plugs are crap! This is my personal opinion only. I tried the bosh platinum in my eclipse (603 whp @36 psi made with NGK plugs) I would get spark blow out, which then fouled it out. I was running a MSD box with a high output coil on plug set up. I change to the a cheap ($2.35) NGK plug (BPR7ES) and I had no problems. I had a even burn in all cylinders.
So that is why I will never run a bosch plug in any of my cars.
TheLom 01-21-2008, 03:31 PM This might be of topic but did anybody try to use pulstar plugs and see any gains? http://www.pulstarplug.com/
12CoolDude 01-21-2008, 03:35 PM NGKs FTW! Bosch have a rep for being temp sensitive and have been reported to loosen or "backout" of their sockets.
I've been wanting to try the Pulstar Plug but have just recently changed out to the NGK and can't justify spending the money.

which ngk's did u go with? any problem or noticeable improvements?
mookish 01-21-2008, 05:22 PM I'd go with NGK also. A plug that works, why pay for the other marketing crap.
Alpina540i 01-21-2008, 05:28 PM Any of you guys run iridium NGKs ?
I have a set but haven't installed them yet.

Alpina540i 01-21-2008, 09:08 PM What is the recomended torque spec for plugs in a 540 19-22 ft Ibs?
avatari 01-21-2008, 09:30 PM NNY is right. Both are OEM. Some engines are stated as requiring the Bosch, others - typically ones with the TU (technical update) - as needing the NGK. Having said that, it's also my understanding that the NGK are better, although I don't have the level of knowledge of others here to know why exactly. But:
M52 engines = Bosch F7 LDCR
M52TU = NGK BKR 6E QYP
M54 = Bosch FGR 7 DQP
robertgu 01-21-2008, 11:48 PM I installed Bosch two prong plantinum plugs 12,000 miles ago. Just took a look at them and there is no sign of any problems. My probelem now is how long do I run them?

Platinums are supposedly good for 60K miles. Others on the forum may say replace them earlier for performance issues. I personally would just check them every 12-15K miles till they look like they need replacing or at least by 60K.
