View Full Version : Possible defection
jcraig 01-20-2008, 02:43 PM Alright, so when my old car got totaled last year and I was looking for a new car, I really wanted a stick, but then this 95 525ia came up in the paper so we bought it. Well, it's been about a year, and today I look in the paper and see not a BMW, but a 1984 300zx with turbo and a 5spd. And I really want that. The only problem is that insurance might be higher since it's kind of a sports car and my parents might not go for that. It's also probably not as safe, another parental negative.
Anyway, anybody here have experience with these cars or can provide me with a completely unsupported opinion of what i should do? :help
attack eagle 01-20-2008, 02:58 PM IF the 5er runs well, keep it and save up for a 5 speed swap, a 5 speed car hit in the front as a donor, or start buying parts as you find them.
84 is the shark nose 70's style car, not the later 'nice' one IIRC. They are not terrible to work on but are generally maintenance intensive... especially right after you buy one !!!
I hated working on them. If you want a z, either buy a 240 or 260, or buy a 300Z
One of my best friends had a 300z in h.s. It was definitely a bad ass car. Truthfully, if I were in h.s. still... I'd roll the Z (yes... cuz I think it's the cooler car in h.s.)...
But then again, I've always loved 4 dr sedans. Room for friends is a big plus too.
In all honesty, It sounds like you want the Z. If your parents allow that.. then go for it. If they don't... I don't think the BMW is a bad option.

84 300zx is the flat wedged shape one, the first model that broke from the 246/60/80 styling. It's a V6 engine. Nissan makes decent cars, the z cars were all great cars, but stay with the bmw, it's a grown-up's car.
clevertd 01-20-2008, 05:04 PM What are the reasons you really want it? I like the Z32 so much better than the Z31

jcraig 01-20-2008, 06:35 PM Ooh, well I went and looked at it and it's straight nappy. I mean the guy popped the hood and a flippin rat ran out. So yeah, definite negative. I wanted it for kind of a project car on the side and something a little zippier than the slushbox 525, but its a piece of crap.
CleanE34 01-20-2008, 06:56 PM if you want a Z go for a 300ZX(Z32). those are pretty damn reliable cars. even the turbo engines were reliable. i've seen ones that are close to 150k and owners just start modding them. if you got money, get a skyline.
4500 RPM 01-20-2008, 08:35 PM Dude, I bought a 525iA because I couldn't find a manual car and my Dad made me have an auto (Not sure why, he thought I beat on my manual cars...)
Anyways, mine will undergo a 5-speed swap hopefully this summer. Just keep the 525 and swap it. There's so much room for more power with these cars.

well i wouldnt call them reliable or dependable, they are money pits, with plenty of electrical problems.... they had manufacturing flaws with electricals which made it a PITA for repairs, $$$$ pits. but if u have the cash for it buy a 300zxTT

Yeah, and the turbo engine cars are a nightmare to work on, NO room in that engine bay.
