View Full Version : I Need Some Eat Chip Purchasing Advice
oilers 01-19-2008, 02:41 PM Im going to be purchasing an EAT chip off of Marks website http://www.dsylva-tech.ca/
I notice he has 3 chips on his site for sale for my car, each with different rev limit. For the people who have purchased off him, which one have you purchased, and which one would you recommend for me. I have an automatic 1989 Bmw 535i. I do mostly city driving, and the fastest i ever take the car is 150 km/h. so should i just stick with the stock rev limit or go higher?
The 3 chips he offers are, one with the stock rev limit, one with a rev limit of 6500, and one with a rev limit of 6800.
Thanks for any input.
My ECU number is 0 261 200 179. You can view them on his website.
slocar 01-19-2008, 03:04 PM With an automatic it really doesn't matter what you pick ... the tranny shifts way before even the stock rev limit. On a manual transmission car it can make a difference; on an automatic, it doesn't really matter.
The power gains are the same, it's just that a higher rev limit (if you can take advantage of it) lets you gather more speed in one gear thus putting you at higher revs when you shift.
lowell 01-19-2008, 04:19 PM If your profile is correct, you have an Alpina B10, which should have Alpina software. An off the shelf EAT would be all wrong for the engine.

Um, no. Regardless of the fact that you can use the SEM switch, which will keep it from shifting no matter what, my 535 does WOT upshifts at 5900rpm.
oilers 01-19-2008, 04:45 PM I have an alpina b10, but the chip is for my 1989 535i, that i use as a second car, and mainly for the winter months down here.
Thanks for all the input so far guys.
oilers 01-19-2008, 04:55 PM I can also get a dinan chip down here from the local bmw dealerships for $250. Any of you guys have any experience with that chip, there really isnt much discussion on the forums here about that chip
screwbiedoo15 01-19-2008, 05:25 PM I have a dinan chip in my car, but it was put in by the previous owner, so i don't know how much of a difference it made. From what most people talk about on the forums, it seems like EAT or Jim C. chips make the most power for our cars

Yes and that's fine if you wanna leave it in say 3rd if you're racing around a track ... a daily driven automatic 535 is not gonna be doing that.
And if you wanna shift it yourself, you'll destroy it way before you get any good use out of the chip.
BTW, 5900 is far from even the stock rev limit, which if I remember correctly is 6150.

Why would I destroy it shifting whenever I feel like? Higher RPM shifts are better for an automatic anyway, you'll be running higher line pressure internally. I drive my car everywhere, I wind my car out everywhere. So far as the stock rev limit, I thought it was 5900, you say 6100, whatever, I've seen 6400 on the tach when it shifts from 1-2 or 2-3. I can take a video for you if you'd like. Point being whatever the stock redline is, that's the point where the 4hp22 will do an upshift. I don't know why you think it won't, but you've been misinformed.
Dinan isn't discussed too much here cuz up until recently, the Dinan chip was close to $400. For the price of $200-250, EAT and JC chips were definitely the better bargain. Truthfully, either chip you get, you will be satisfied.
Personally, I say get the no limit, because they are all the same price... so why not?
oilers 01-20-2008, 04:09 PM Decided to go with the 6800 rev limit one, since thats what the bavauto chip, the jim conforti chip, and i believe the dinan chip as well give you.
Thanks for all your input guys, greatly appreciated.
