The in-tank fuel pumps are still about the same. Under the rear seat and under a panel, then a retaining ring, coupla nuts too. Not difficult. There's a fuel level sender and transfer pump in the driver's side and a level sender and the main fuel pump in the passenger side. The level senders take an average of the two levels to give the guage it's reading. It's possible that either of the level senders has gone bad, or possibly the transfer pump (in which case the saddle tank on the driver's side would actually be full of gas, or at least have considerably more, but the passenger side with the main pump would be empty and you'd still show a half or quarter tank of gas).

Take off the panel for both sides of the saddle tank under the seat. See which side still has gas left in it and that's the side you need to worry about the fuel level sender.
