Hari 01-19-2008, 12:53 PM Turbo and cheap do not belong in the same sentence. The hidden costs are always there. Then there is boost addiction... worst than any drug... I have been there and have lived to tell about it. Binjammin 01-19-2008, 01:04 PM How much are you looking to spend, and how much power are you looking to make? There's always DIY and Megasquirt, but that's a big time investment. Turbo kits are expensive because of the time and effort invested in building it. RandomThoughT78 01-19-2008, 01:22 PM Well right now i am running 189hp...but i'm looking to atleast get it to 290...and from there i'll invest more into it.Right now i got about 2000 rdy to go on it but i think i might be having to spend way more than that...like a lot more. RandomThoughT78 01-19-2008, 01:24 PM i really doubt i would get it that high,I used to drive a mustang but i just got this bimmer about 4 months ago and i'll tell you what i've never going back i love this damn car... Hari 01-19-2008, 01:25 PM I would say buy a used complete E36 supercharger kit for about ~$3000. That will get you the 290HP and your won't have to worry about the trouble of turbocharging (tapping oil lines, routing piping, exhaust, etc). BigM62 01-19-2008, 01:41 PM You have a 525i.Buy a 540i.Honest,simple and direct answer. Cereal Killa 01-19-2008, 03:16 PM 2k will not get you into a turbo for your car. Mine is a fairly basic set-up and I don't want to think of how much I spent :( (upwards of 4k I think) Supercharging would be cheaper, but the problem with getting a e36 one is the brackets wont match up and you'll have to get them made. clevertd 01-19-2008, 08:39 PM Finding a used supercharger set up and talking to the company who made it so you can figure out what needs to be changed will get you to your goal. Turbo? Not gonna happen for ~$2k. Even Jon (Urinemachine/5mall5nail5) had a $2500 build and he did a lot, if not all, of his own work and that did not include cost of new clutch and other misc bits and pieces. I'm $600 into my build now (TCD manifold, TiAL wastegate) and will be buying a MS2 within the next week that will put me to $1100. I'm looking to spend roughly $2500 for a turbo setup that will allow me to run 300whp. I do my own work, and I can source parts on the stupidly cheap. I'll be building my own MS, and I've got spare 4hp22s laying around just waiting to be rebuilt. The turbo is going to be the biggest single expense, it should set me back roughly $500 for a good used one, the rest is all nickle and dimage, there's just too many small things you're going to run into that will need replacing, upgrading, or some combination of both. ceedee 01-19-2008, 11:32 PM :lol And that's without turbo! I'm almost certain I'll be taking over and redoing a website for a local auto restoration shop so I should be able to have access to a lot more resources than I do now. The stock m30 exhaust manifolds are symmetrical, you can install them on the engine upside down. If you do that, you can buy flanges and build an up pipe to mount the turbo on. It's not the best or the worst way to mount a turbo, it'll work for what I want to do with it. clevertd 01-20-2008, 02:09 AM There's someone from mye28 doing that, I think he posted over here in the FI section as well. http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=891806 Don't know if you've seen his project yet or not. screwbiedoo15 01-20-2008, 04:50 AM :lol And that's without turbo! Sounds awsome Binjammin, really makes me want to go FI but it looks like i'm going the N/A route, since I'm worried about my gas mileage dropping too much with FI. What are you expecting your gas mileage to be like if you're already getting 10mpg? lol Binjammin 01-20-2008, 11:56 AM Pretty similar, but I'll be going with an internally wastegated turbo to begin with. Picture that up pipe in the picture on that thread but without the phallic kickstand. Cereal Killa 01-20-2008, 01:05 PM There should be no change in mpg if just crusing on a good tune. You are asking a sort of ridiculous question. There is no cheap turbo setup for the 525. If you want cheap-er turbo you need a 535 with the M30. They had turbo kits for the 7 that will fit on the 535. Second of all, the forced induction sub-forum is where you will find most of your answers. I am going to do turbo on my car and am expecting to pay around $7k total. If I could do my own fabrication maybe I could dip into the $2-3k. No one talks smack about respectable questions. It's the people that don't search or ask in the wrong section that get smacked. And that is only b/c most of the people on the forum that have been here for ever are tired of the same questions being asked by new members that don't search or google first. No disrespect Shuasha 01-28-2008, 03:39 PM I have a bunch of experience with turbocharging M50 based engines.. First, if this is your daily driver, don't do it. Period.. there will be issues and your car will be down for a couple of days. It happens. Besides that, if you can weld and are really handy, you can probably do it for around 3-4k. I recommend using Techno550's tuning if you have a vanos engine, AA if you don't. You can ask but I don't think that Techno has anything for non-vanos. You can do megasquirt, but some people have had issues with it. Some haven't, I would take the stock ECU any day. People tend to forget about things like the clutch, boost controller, exhaust (if not stock), and just little odds and ends that really add up. |
