So on my way home last night I hear this strange rumbling and then screeching coming from under the hood. Moments later...pop. My power steering is gone and my battery light come on instantly. I have a 2001 325it. Is this something I can fix myself? Are belts expensive? Why is my battery light on- related to the alternator? Is my car going to over heat.....help my arms are breaking off trying to turn the wheel!!!! I like to work the car myself IF it's something I can handle. I'm afraid the dealer will rip my wallet a new one? Thought-insight-help-bring it on....god I love this site!:D:D

there is a belt that drives the alternator, power steering, and water pump. That is defiantly the one that broke (broken twice for me now). The part is cheap, probably less than 30. Not sure about the labor as I had my mechanic do it.

and yes, the car will definitely overheat, so don't drive it. or if you do, make sure it doesn't get above normal
