I got a reckless driving ticket today which I feel was unwarranted. This was in Brooklyn. I was in the far left lane, which was turn only, and I wanted to go straight. My fiance was in the passenger seat and looked out for me to make sure no cars were coming, and I switched lanes to go straight. I was pulled over and given a ticket.
My fiance says that I should fight the ticket myself but I am thinking I should get a lawyer. Any opinions and recs for a good lawyer? I just don't want the 5 points. My record is clean right now.
TIA

where here is the ultimate question: Did you cross the intersection by driving straight or did you change lanes prior to crossing the intersection? This is what the judge will examine, and this is what the cop will give testimony on. If you drove across the intersection driving straight and then change lanes, then you will be faulted for reckless driving., especially if the cop provides testimony support that fact. I was in traffic court last tuesday, and guy had the similar ticket. Once the cop stated his claim, the defendant lawyer was of no use, the judge automatically found the defendant guilty. NYC Traffic court is the bigest rip off out there. The judge already knows what decision they're going to render. They really want you to come to court so they can collect the court fees. If this violation happen in a known trouble spot (frequent car accidents) then there's no way of beating it. The judge will find you guilty to set precedent and collect enough money in reserve for a big city pay out.
