View Full Version : 2600 rpm stutter and check engine flash
BMWbaum 01-19-2008, 01:31 AM after rebuilding a cylinder head in a 1993 318i my car is running......not so smooth, at 2600 rpm's it it shutters, an czech engine flashes, til i hit gas again, ( ping sensory or something) now I have an oil leak as well, somewhere near bottom of timeing chain area. My timing isn't perfect of course, but i don't knwo whats up with the stutter, should I take this car to the dealer and hav them do stuff to it. ?
rennfahrer 01-29-2008, 02:26 AM how's fuel delivery and oil level?
BMWbaum 01-30-2008, 12:11 AM hmm practically I need to change the fuel filter, rebuilding the head I only change the injektor rings, but not the injektors , Im at 124k are there any fuel delivery parts that should be replaced by now?
BMWbaum 01-30-2008, 12:20 AM by the way the check engine light is knock control regulator at nearly 2600rpm it doesn't happen everytime though
rennfahrer 01-30-2008, 03:34 AM have you tried replacing the knock sensor?
or maybe just the cam position sensor
i don't know
124k, you should probably think about getting new fuel filter if you havent's
BMWbaum 01-30-2008, 07:40 PM danke schön für den Rat.. rennfahrer

bmdubside 02-01-2008, 07:01 AM Sounds like you didn't line up your timing marks correctly when reinstalling the timing chain. You were probably off by a tooth or two. It's causing predetonation at 2600 rpm.
tsweers89 02-01-2008, 12:08 PM does this motor only have one knock sensor correct? not to framiliar with the 4 cyl
BMWbaum 02-02-2008, 05:47 PM there are 2 knock sensors, on the m42,
I'm doing some sensor replacing on the car next week, 02, cam, knocks, and ICV, and fuel filter. Thinking about it's stuttered acceleration, makes me wonder how much my timing is off.
thejlevie 02-02-2008, 07:43 PM Before replacing sensors, you need to make sure that the cam timing is absolutely correct. If it is off it could cause this problem and no sensor you replace will have any affect.
BMWbaum 02-02-2008, 10:31 PM Honestly, without Cam alighnment tool, this is rather tedious I probably had to adjust it 6 times at first (naturally not perfect). This time I'd have to get a new gasket, Does anyone know Dealer cost for a Timing service? plus it be fun to borrow a loaner for the day.:stickoutt

yah they were off, I couldn't figure out why though, can the timing chain drop off the crank gear, and then if I pulled the chain back up onto it I moved the chain off it's original teeth. I set the cams, cam gears and back to marks, but they didn't align with the mark I put on the chain. I figured as long as the chain is on, is there an "I'm ashamed of my bimmer mechanic skills":withstupi smiley
that'll have to do for now
Ohtwo 02-07-2008, 03:20 PM A flashing check engine light typically indicates a bad misfire and catalyst damage. I think its safe to say the timing chain could be related.
tsweers89 02-07-2008, 04:13 PM Also make sure you dont switch the knock sensors. They are specific
