View Full Version : Dinan OBC Correction Device?
blondie 04-17-2003, 07:18 PM Has anyone tried this Dinan device that corrects the OBC for larger fuel injectors?
It's very expensive ($320), so I'm wondering if it works well, and how difficult it is to install. Is it a new OBC unit, or does it plug in somewhere?
Thanks for any help!
Q
///MINI 04-17-2003, 10:16 PM Got any pics? Just curious to see. I don't even have an OBC.
Mitch P. 04-17-2003, 10:31 PM I have it on my car. Since I'm anal and use the OBC often I decided that it was worth the cost. I like it very much and it corrects to within 1% of the actual mileage. Probably even better than that, but I just wanted to state its accuracy.
Easy to hook up? Not really. You'll have to splice into the main engine harness. So, depending on your skill level, if you're armed with a wiring diagram and the Dinan instructions, together with some decent soldering skills I'm sure you could do it.
My wiring harness is being replaced as we speak so I may have to go through with re-wiring it and will let you know. That's if my mechanic doesn't wire it in for me. If he does, then I'll ask him how difficult it was.
BAADDOG 04-18-2003, 07:50 AM I'm running the Dinan fuel correction module. Bom I paid $250.00 for the device along with the s/c kit. It was installed along with the s/c kit.
Works as advertised. :)
blondie 04-18-2003, 11:49 AM Okay, thanks for the info, guys!
I love the OBC (especially the Miles Left On Tank), and I'm bummed that it doesn't work right anymore. I suppose Dinan's part is worthwhile. I just hate paying a pile of money just to make something work that worked already. :az:
///MRoadster, it looks like this: (sorry for the bad picture)

Q
blondie 04-18-2003, 12:09 PM Oh- one more question. What size fuel injectors do you have? Is the Dinan device precalibrated for the size of injectors that they use on their kits?
Q
Yes, it's calibrated for the injectors that come with their kits, keeping in mind the differential from stock. For instance, the '95 E36 M3s come with smaller injectors than the OBD-II models, so the correction on the OBD-II cars is smaller.
You only really need to be in the ballpark though, you can still correct up to 25% through the special mode of the OBC as well.
If you're handy with circuits (I'm certainly not) you could accomplish the same thing with a $5 Radio Shack special. - Beau

Special mode? What's the special mode of the OBC?
Anyone know what the stock M52 injectors are rated at? Maybe I'm close enough to correct it another way. $320 + installation is a lot for that Dinan piece.
Q
I only played with this when I first picked up my car (over 1.5 years ago) so I can only vaguely remember what it does. From what I recall you have about 20 functions, some of them test, some calibration, and some unit conversion. Do a search to see how to access it, IIRC, you have to hold down a couple buttons for so many seconds before ignition. - Beau
zenon 04-18-2003, 01:36 PM are you talking about holding the tirp reset in and moving the ignition from the 1st to 2nd position beau? I didn't know you could change anything there...
This is what I'm talking about -

Set #20. Like I said you have %25 authority, can go from 1000 to 1250. - Beau

Wow, thanks for that link! That's cool info!
Q
Not a prob, I shoud have just posted it in the first message - took about a minute to hunt down.
Good way to blow your Saturday morning. I dare you to let it speak French for a month  - Beau
zenon 04-18-2003, 02:41 PM there is a country out there that is officially multilingual beau...
If I can ever afford a BMW maybe I WILL have it talk to me in french....
"Je suis une BMW de langue française de turbo"
ooooh sexy! :p
Zenon, don't be such a tease, drop a hint... you mean France, right? :stickoutt Seriously, aren't most countries with a tourism industry officially multilingual?
What do I know. I live in a box. It is black.
- Beau
zenon 04-18-2003, 03:36 PM that I know of canada is the only OFFICIAL mulitlingual country. which means nothing can be sold in canada w/o both french and english on the package... we get scammed outta some things cuz mfr's are too lazy to re-label while others have french stickers to meet compliance.....
also by law we have to take some french in school (@ least 3yrs IIRC)
also all store signs have to be bilingual (most aren't but if you reported them there is a law that sez they must)
in my city's french area the stop signs also say arret and not stop:)
Ah. Thanks for the extracurricular info. - Beau
blondie 04-18-2003, 05:09 PM Oui, c'est vrai! Zenon, je suis Canadienne aussi, mais j'habite au Californie presentment.
Peut etre je devrais programme ma OBC pour parle Francais, juste par ce que c'est possible.
:D
You know what I miss about Canada? Pirate cookies. Mmmm...

Yeah, living in California (and America in general) is great. I like it here very much. I miss Canada though- my home and native land, as they say. :)
Pirate Cookies- they're like Oreos, but oatmeal cookies and peanut butter filling. Christie makes them. One of the many great Canadian foods they don't have here in the US. :(
Q
zenon 04-18-2003, 07:13 PM Yea I'll always be a true blue, uh I guess true red canadian:)
I'm glad you like the states, I'll prolly have to move there too.:az:
I'll see if I can find those cookies, if I can find them I'll shoot you a box:buttrock
maybe I can beta test some video games for you:biglaughb haha
lol
Zenon,
Where are you in Canada anyway? I might be headed up to Toronto at the end of the summer... - Beau
zenon 04-18-2003, 09:12 PM hey that may actually work out.
I'm in Winnipeg Manitoba.
But I'm heading to montreal in the middle of august, then the banff area (canmore actually) in the end of august... oh yea and edmonton in the end of june.... and may possibly head back out to montreal/TO area in the middle of oct and meet up with dave for a bit while out there.
I would like sometime in August assuming the weather would be much better.
I doubt I'll be going... it would just be to meet up with a girl I met in London last month, hard to say whether we'll still be in touch. - Beau
zenon 04-18-2003, 11:17 PM cool, the august montreal thing is pretty for sure, so PM me if you wanna hook-up...
London eh? I can hardly wait till I can $$ to cross oceans:)
watch out for those British smiles tho:laugh j/k
Does anyone has a copy of the installation instruction for the OBC correction device ?
I can probably take a look at this and the wiring diagram in manual to come up with a cheap radio shack circuit..
