View Full Version : Are BMW remanufactured trannies good?
JT-KGY 07-25-2001, 09:02 PM For those that remember, I'm having problem with my 4-5 shifts
after some heavy throttle.
The extended warranty company has agreed to replace my tranny. The shop told me that I will be getting a BMW remanufactured one. Is that any good?? How
is that different or compare to new factory ones???
Also, like to thank those that help me and answering my
tranny questions especially Jon Caldito and others.
Thank you,
Bob ///M3 07-25-2001, 09:19 PM I would say it is as good as a new one myself. I wouldn't have a problem with it...

Kevlar 07-25-2001, 09:26 PM I got a remanufactured tranny for my ex-GF's car a couple of months ago. As far as I know it's still running.
BMWguy206 07-25-2001, 09:32 PM Remanufactured transmission are just as good as new ones out from the factory.
From what I know, all the seals have been replaced, and I'm sure the box is opened up for cleaning, inspection, and replacement of parts if necessary.
Glad to hear the ext. warranty company will take care of you!
JT-KGY 07-25-2001, 10:31 PM Ya, I got my ext warranty for about 1900 through Wynns.
After the tranny, they would have covered around 3000
for my car...
Well worth the money for me, I would recommend them to
anyone.

Correct. I just got back from a tour of a ZF industries remanufacturing plant. Not only do they replace seals/gaskets, clean, bead-blast, but if any revisions have been made to the original design they include those also. Also, at least at ZF, they keep all of the parts from your transmission together instead of mixing parts from other disassembled transmissions. They say this has been proven to produce a better remanufactured transmission.
Josh///M3 07-26-2001, 02:46 PM What does a remanufactured 6 speed cost?

I don't know but maybe this will help...
My total bill for the replacement would have been $2300.
I think the tranny cost $2000 out of that.

I bought it through New Century Alhambra for about $1900...
It covers everything that your dealer covers... you can do
repairs from any shop. A $50 deductible is waived if I do
repairs from New Century.
Jon97 07-27-2001, 02:35 AM I received a remanufactured tranny about 8 months ago. It felt more supple than the bad tranny at first, but then about a month later, it began balking at upshifts to third. I took it in for inspection, and the tech and I winded it out about 15 times on a deserted stretch of roadway in order to recreate the problem. Well, not only could we not recreate the problem, the problem went away.
Today? The tranny is completely reliable in all upshifts and downshifts. Just don't expect notchiness to go away entirely, and remember that the tranny will need to be broken in during the beginning to soften up the gears.
If I wanted one where would I buy it? $tealer?

Jon97,
This is exactly what I want to know... I'll be sure to ask about it
too when I take it to the shop... Does it need to be drive in
a certain way before breaking in??
JM540iT 01-02-2008, 03:26 PM I have a 2002 540iT with the sport transmission and 80,000 miles. In one or two minutes I went from a working transmission to a non-working transmission. According to my dealer, the pump failed, the fluid fried, and now , without taking the transmission apart, they want $8,000 to rebuild the transmission with all new parts. They offer no alternative.
What are the alternatives in the New York, NY area? Can a good but non-factory BMW place sell me a rebuilt transmission for less?
BTW, the dealer did $300 of diagnostics, but can tell me almost nothing -- why it happened, what's broken inside, etc.
