View Full Version : New Support Vendor: Pro-Imports in Gaithersburg, MD
Pro-Imports 04-17-2003, 02:12 PM I wanted to post and let everyone know that Pro-Imports is now a supporting vendor on bimmerforums. We felt that it was in everyone’s best interests that we give back to our local community as we begin to establish more of an online presence. A few of you in the MD/DC/VA are already familiar with us, but for those of you who aren’t; we are a service, repair, and performance facility that specializes in European and Japanese automobiles. We can provide you with all manufacturer recommended maintenance services, and we provide a free rental car for all factory recommended services that are 4 hours or more. Most of our prices for services are listed on our website, and I think you’ll find that our prices are very competitive for this region. We carry a fairly comprehensive range of aftermarket for BMWs at competitive prices, and are currently working on our online catalog. We’re also an authorized dealer and installer for Active Autowerke and StopTech.
For service, repair, and straight bolt-on aftermarket goods, our labor rate is $75/hr. For custom jobs (such as an engine transplant, or jobs that require fabrication and welding) our labor rate is $85/hr. You’re free to purchase your own parts and bring them to us, and we do not penalize you by charging a higher labor rate like other shops. We also offer a 1-year/12,000 mile warranty on all parts and labor (if you bring in your own parts though, we only warranty the labor).
Currently, we’re offering 10% off on all parts and labor (with some restrictions) to bimmerforums members, and we’re offering FREE installation with the purchase of a StopTech big brake kit. We run periodic specials, which we’ll post about when we run them, or you can check our website for more information. We are still working on adding more content and products to our website, so contact us if you don’t see what you want, and keep checking back!
Thanks for your time and support,
Pat and David
kapolani 04-17-2003, 05:12 PM David - I'm glad to see you guys on this board. Welcome.
Pro-Imports is taking care of my M3 since I got into an accident.
Very friendly and knowledgeable people. These guys aren't looking for a quick buck, but more interested in building a relationship with the customer.
They are also installing my AA supercharger kit. Pat, the main mechanic, is extremely knowledgeable, and know's all about FI applications.
-russ
tripleM 04-17-2003, 08:04 PM of not getting one. Guess where my refund for my new suspension setup is going to?:D
I have heard nothing but great things about these ppl. So I will drive out of my way to get to them.
Thank you Uncle Sam & Gdub!
kapolani 04-17-2003, 08:50 PM You can get whatever suspension parts you need from them at very competetive prices.
Quick M3 04-17-2003, 09:33 PM Can you guys due alignment on my 03 M3 after I install my H&R lowering springs?
Pro-Imports 04-17-2003, 09:42 PM Russ -- I know you'll love your supercharger. Just reading about the AA supercharger and seeing that someone finally developed a system for the BMWs based on an entirely new supercharger unit makes me think about buying an E36 M3 just to supercharge and test out AA products on...
tripleM -- Let me know if you need anything, feel free to email us and we can get you pricing on a range of suspension setups. I don't know whether your car is just a street car, or if you track or autocross it, but we can suggest an appropriate suspension setup for your needs.
Quick M3 -- Yes, we charge $75 for a standard 4-wheel alignment.
///MINI 04-17-2003, 09:50 PM Here's another converted customer. You've all heard me sing praises of other places. Now hear me when I say this is DEFINITELY the best TUNER in the DC Metro Area in terms of pricing, convenience, and most of all - CUSTOMER SERVICE.
Folks here should know how particular I am when it comes to my cars. These guys know their stuff. They don't just know how to install stuff. They know how to TUNE them all the way down to the software programming which is super rare in our area for BMWs.
Welcome aboard, guys! I'll be seeing you soon enough.
Quick M3 04-17-2003, 09:51 PM David, thanks for the reply. Do you guys add weight to the car like the factory calls for? and what type of system do you use?
NoSoup4U 04-17-2003, 10:02 PM Took you guys long enough to realize this ... I had to prod Phil and the others to try him out ... :D :D
///MINI 04-17-2003, 10:04 PM Oh yeah, props to James for the introduction!
Teuton 04-17-2003, 10:18 PM Pat and Dave- Glad to see you are a supporting vendor.
To anyone who hasn't been to or heard of Pro Imports, they are a great shop that takes the time and has the attention to detail to do the job right. I have been a loyal dealership customer and was looking for a shop to do my future work after my warranty runs out. Clearly they have proved that they do great work. I have many plans for the future that Pro Imports will install.
QuickM3- I just had align my car and it is fantastic. He does have you sit in the car when he sets the alignment. I am very happy with the difference. I got a chance to break it in at the AutoX school the next day. He set my camber so that it reduced my understeer noticably.
Pete
Pro-Imports 04-17-2003, 10:33 PM Phillip -- Thanks for the comments!
Quick M3 -- Pat tells me we have a "modified Hunter alignment machine with the BMW kinetic program." We purchased it from a BMW dealership when they upgraded to the latest gee-whiz-high-tech alignment machines. We usually have the owner sit in the driver's seat when we align the BMWs, and if the owner's not available, we try to get someone similar in weight to sit in the car.
James -- Yes, thanks for the introductions... I actually recall reading threads where a certain few people were swearing by that *other* shop that we won't mention... :12:
Pete -- Glad to see you here too, how did the AutoX go?
boy david your up late....:D
by the way, i didn't realize tomorrow is Good Friday, i can probably get over there sometime tomorrow
get those pen and papers ready and warm up the credit card machine
:stickoutt
jeff
Quick M3 04-17-2003, 10:44 PM Sounds good I will try to install the springs next week and give it time to settle and will come see you.
Pro-Imports 04-17-2003, 10:47 PM Jeff -- Just excited to be a sponsor here. We're sponsoring Audiworld too, but boy, the forum format they use is a HEADACHE to keep up with!
I'm sure Pat will be happy to see you *tomorrow* instead of on Saturday when he'd like to *finally* take a weekend off. I won't be in the office tomorrow though, I'll be out thrashing about at Summit... boy, I hope it rains tomorrow, it'll make things a little more even for me and my little S2000 against those other high horsepower cars :D
Teuton 04-18-2003, 08:16 AM Hey David,
AutoX went well, when I was on course. The car handled much better with the addition of the X-brace and the alignment. The car understeered dramatically less and was boarderline neutral. I could pivot the car with some judicious throttle application. I plan to tweek the suspension settings (Shocks) in the rear to a stiffer mark to get a more neutral car. I'll be trying this on the 27th at the next autoX in Fed Ex field.
Once again, I can't say enough good things about you guys to my friends,
Pete
kapolani 04-18-2003, 08:40 AM I don't think you guys are going to have any free time soon!
What!?!? Pat is taking a Saturday off?!?! LOL.

Yes Indeed Pro-Imports is the final stop for any BMW owner to get the right tune.

Thanxz James for the info and getting me in the right direction. U helped make it possible to get my M3 project started. - James
I might take a trip down to the shop and see how things are going. Pat I still have sum things to get to you. My bumper will be in by Sunday. Hopefully I’ll get it to ya Monday.
See you guys later.

Preppy 04-18-2003, 02:59 PM Welcome aboard David and Pat! I live like 5mins from ya'll :D
So could yall tell me if a 95 m3 with 95k miles is too high to install a s/c? and if not, what about shrick cams? Just out of curiousity :)
///MINI 04-18-2003, 04:24 PM David's gone to Summit Point for the day. I don't know if he'll respond until tomorrow.
kapolani 04-18-2003, 04:52 PM Preppy - I was told by Karl that they installed a SC on a 120,000 mile car. As long as the Comp/Leakdown test jives correctly you should be good to go. Futhermore, he stated that the car should last the persons lifetime (within reason of course). A properly maintained engine lasts what, 250,000 miles or so? Seems logical.
Preppy 04-18-2003, 04:54 PM Score...cause I wanna s/c when i get the m3 :)
How does the AA compare to ESS and how much should i be looking to pay?
kapolani 04-18-2003, 05:24 PM I don't know any numbers on the ESS kit. I can only tell you what I've heard or read about. Basically the ESS kit is built well. I haven't heard how the tuning is, or who does it, so that would have to be found out.
I do know that the AA kit should net roughly ~290 - 305rwhp on an OBD I platform. That's on a dynojet and numbers would vary with the original strength of the pre-FI motor. It has it's own intercooler and Karl said that they've done 10 runs in a row with minimal heat-soak. that's awesome. It's done in Miami weather too so that's saying something. Karl has mentioned that they've been playing with stage II systems. You could also open up the exhaust side and net some more ponies as well.
Pat is a highly skilled mechanic. He knows all about FI. He won't spend your money foolishly - in fact he just talked me out of spending a shitload about 10 minutes ago. He can work intimately with Karl since Pat is now an AA dealer. With that combo I wouldn't hesitate at all if you had the money.
Preppy 04-18-2003, 07:29 PM Mmmmm, thanks Russ :) I know what I will be getting for my birthday this year :devillook
Now i need to sell my 328 and get that m3 :)
kapolani 04-18-2003, 07:45 PM nice...
really.............
what were you going to do ?

Chris,
Russ beat me to it... just make sure the compression and leakdown tests are within spec, and make sure nothing is wrong with the drivetrain and putting an SC on the car should be no problem.
Preppy 04-19-2003, 11:21 AM What about putting in a s/c on a car with an auto tranny :dunno :)
Thanks David...I'd drive over to see yall, but being in school w/o my car nearby hinders that :(

Chris, auto trannies are fine too. We've put superchargers on automatic M3s before.
Preppy 04-19-2003, 06:58 PM AHHH, my a/c unit(compressor) seized up and caused the belt to break this morning! If I take it to you guys, how much should this cost me to get a new a/c replaced?
NoSoup4U 04-21-2003, 08:38 AM Dave -
Are you guys able to get the autopower roll bar for BMW's? I know you have a lot of Audi track guys; so, I'm wondering if you guys are going to be a distributor for these items?
Also, whom do you recommend for rims? I have a couple of rims with MINOR curb rash ... is it the same price regardless of the amount of rash?
Plus, can your person do powdercoating and polishing the lip?

Preppy, please call us or email us for this. There's a couple options for you.

James,
No, we don't deal with autopower, and we don't plan on dealing in roll bars or roll cages anytime soon. If you'd like to purchase a roll bar on your own, and have them freight it to us for installation in your car, we'd be fine with that.
You already know we go through the Wheel Doctor for our rim repairs... it doesn't really matter whether you have MINOR curb rash or MAJOR curb rash, the wheel needs to be repainted, and the charge is the same.
I believe we already quoted you a price for the powdercoating as well... I'd have to go back and dig up the email to find it, but powdercoating/polishing wheels is not something we deal a lot with, this is something you would be better off going through a wheel guy to do.
sunir 04-24-2003, 12:18 PM is doing work on my LTW M3 right now to get it ready for VIR after it overheated at Summit Point a few days ago (at the Ferrari event)...I recommend these guys and their support and understanding of my track related needs is second to none:) ! I think PI will be the place for BMW tuning, performance, and maintenance because they know these cars well....they are customer focused and honest folks....
Sunir
'95 M3 LTW track car
kapolani 04-24-2003, 01:10 PM Absolutely!
Preppy 04-24-2003, 02:34 PM How much for powdercoating? Per wheel? (you can see my wheels in my sig :)
ForumUser 04-24-2003, 02:44 PM I got a glimpse of Sunir's M3 when I was there today. I guess it was his, all I saw was the distinctive markings on the hood. :)
Got an alignment today. I did PSS9s a few weeks back and the car needed the obligatory check.
At first I was a bit worried cause when I got there they were having a problem with another car that was before mine. I drove 50 minutes to get there this morning (for a 9:00am appointment) and I couldn't really go hang out anywhere and wait. They took care of me though with about a 25 minute delay.
Did not meet David but did meet and talk to Pat and Suo (spelling?). Did the sit in the car thing during the alignment.
I think I've found a place that I'm going to like. Yes, they were very customer friendly given that it looked like they weren't having the best of days (virus on their server, unforseen problems with some of the repairs).
Thanks PI.
NoSoup4U 04-24-2003, 02:45 PM IIRC -- it is around $105.00-$140.00 per wheel Chris. I remember I wanted to powdercoat my center black and then have a polished lip; but, he can't do that one :( ...
But, powdercoating should be fine/easy to do ...
Preppy 04-24-2003, 03:03 PM Damn, I was going to try for the powdercoat AND polished lip too.....hmm, so around $450-600...I'll have to put this off till later then...
vjlax18 04-24-2003, 03:26 PM David - I sent an message through your web site. I need to get an allignment done. No one will touch my car around here (Northern Baltimore) for a normal price.

tripleM 05-02-2003, 09:34 PM All right..here another plug for this joint.
I finally did a big ticket install:
Some may say its simple but like any surgery there might be complication.
H&R/Bilstein
KMAC front & rears.
4 Wheel refinishing.
PI is very customer savvy & techincally professional.
Pat, head techniciuan & propriator is first class. He's more of a teacher than a salesman. Which is good for us consumers.
David is the biz guy. But @ least he's not going to huckster you into buying crap you don't need. No hard sell like that place out by Dulles. ie he won't pull a quick one on you.
Suo, the front desk guy (sorry I don't know how to spell his name) is friendly & chats it up. & Once again no selling!! Thanks for the ride to Metro!
Ok, the point @ PI is to give you fair, honest, & excellent professional work.
Sh!t who the heck gives 3 months warranty on aligments??!!! Esp. on these pothole lined city streets?
Our parents grew up w/ mechanics they could trust. Why can't we have the same.
I drove 32 miles crossing the Legion Bridge to bring my car there even though I live near Dulles.
Call me crazy...but I don't need DA coilovers w/ RD sways on a new car that's only been driven 2 weeks. You all get the picture.
I'm a Banker by day & a cheap bastard all other times. I didn't just blow some $$'s until I got my tax refund AND a raise @ work. Kinda like wearing suspender & a belt.
So I did my due diligence w/ PI. If they screw up, they make it right. That's all you can ask for from people!
Thanks James & Sean for recommending PI to me.
I just hope success doesn't turn PI into that place out by Dulles...
bimmerpwr 05-09-2003, 10:52 AM Looks like ProImports is getting the respect that they deserve!
magnetic1 05-11-2003, 09:32 PM Pat, any idea what is wrong w/ Sunir's car... it died at VIR.
:(
NoSoup... I recommend Piper Motorsports for rollbars... its all he does and is well known in this area for that type of install.
bimmerpwr 05-11-2003, 09:37 PM I heard many good things about Piper Motorsports. When I get a set of roll bars, I know where I would go.
Pro-Imports 05-12-2003, 01:08 AM That situation with Sunir's car was a condition that existed when he had his car towed to our shop from "that other place."
The rest you'll have to ask Sunir about personally. Giving out details about a customer's car troubles is just plain bad business practice... If Sunir wanted it to be made public on the forums, I'm sure he'd have been the first one to post up here...
But the situation is being corrected as we speak, so hopefully you'll be able to see him passing everyone left and right at the next track event... ;)

TransHuman 05-12-2003, 10:00 AM Nice..glad to hear there's a decent shop in the area! I just finished up my warranty work and was looking to find a reputable and knowledgable shop. I hate always walking into VOB and having to teach people about the bold-on mods I have. David, I'll be in there sometime towards the end of the summer for some suspension work (if money allows).
Juan.
NoSoup4U 05-12-2003, 10:05 AM Yeah, since you gave Sunir Nawwwzzzz ... I'm sure he'll be passing people right and left :D
....and sunir keeps telling me that it is the driver not the car .... BAHH.... I know better now ... it is the Nawzzzzz!
Pro-Imports 05-12-2003, 01:41 PM Juan,
I bought my '95 M3 from VOB back in 1995, I always enjoyed having them try to deny warranty on my car for everything I did on that car...
We look forward to seeing you Juan. We just got some aggressive new pricing on Bilstein Sport shocks from our supplier, so if you're just looking for the standard "sporty street/track" suspension, we can set you up.

TransHuman 05-12-2003, 02:51 PM Great..appreciate it David. I actually may be stopping in sooner than later for some rear brakes. I just had the euros put up front. My guy at VOB made it sound as if my rears were in good shape..upon visual inspection, I'm a little alarmed at how worn the rotors are. Perhaps next month..still recovering from this month's KY bend-over session! :)

Blade929 05-21-2003, 09:54 AM Here is another plug for Pro-Imports that's kind of different from the rest. I contacted David a couple of weeks ago about upgrading my suspension. After coming down to the shop and talking to him for about an hour he did some research and we decided on Bilstein's Pss9's with ride height a rebound damping adjustment <--both of which were very important to me because I have a lot of weight in the trunk from audio equipment and I still want a nice ride quality.
I then decided I was getting a good deal on UUC sways from someone else so I bought them. Well now we sit and wait for UUC to get me the sways which are still on backorder. David and ProImports have been extremely helpful with scheduling and patience as we wait.
Daivd also gave me a great deal on SSR Gt3's that will equal or be better than anything else around even with MD tax.
The car is scheduled for May 31 so I will give you guys an update once all of the work is finished. Thanks again David.:buttrock
bimmerpwr 05-21-2003, 11:01 AM I remember seeing you at ProImports. Blue BMW with lots of stereo equipments in the back. I am glad you are getting the setup that you like. Keep us updated!
