This has been an on going project, mostly everything under the car/mechanical has been done over the past year. It's a pretty basic car, no expensive/crazy prep work, just the basics. I started this "final stage"(is it ever final? ;) ) from track car to race car about a week before Christmas so here's a sort of FF on the interior work done so far. Most of the work seems to take place between 10pm and midnight :embarrasm .
Start:

I removed the AC compressor and lines somewhere in that process, but the heater core remains. I'm still going back and forth whether or not to keep it. Also both front windows/actuators have been removed. It will be going to the cage builder in the next few weeks.

Congrats on doing the most difficult part of the build -stipping out a perfectly good car! I remember I had a hard time tearing everything out of my car. Its one of those once done jobs there's no going back.

It will be great to have some more competition in '08. What's your first planned race going to be?

Yes, I'll put them up for sale sometime.

April, I assume it's going to be at MSR, but I'll be there wherever it is.

Robert, have you thought about GTS w/NASA?

Always up for good racing. I have some reservations about being out on track with some of the other race groups though. I'm going to come down to the Houtson MSR event in Feb and just check things out. If I get the warm fuzzies then I'm def. going to run some of the NASA events this year. Right now planning to race the March event. It sounds like there will be a few more people in GTS2 for '08 as well.

I dunno. Remember my black car? Stripped it out, then reassembled it...traded it in on a tow vehicle. :buttrock

I get what your saying. I was at the NASA event at MSR-H in feb last year. It was crazy to watch car after car go into the wall in that run group. Ok, maybe it was only a few cars, but still. But from what I've heard the run groups have shifted around now and its better.

Easy. Some tools, some thought, and some brute strength. Most of us aren't emotionally attached to the cars, they're just tools used for racing. BMW made thousands of them. Perfectly good cars make the best race car starting points.

Oh and Greg, someone wants to buy your door panels...sell them! Soon as you put them up for sale at your leisure, no one will want them.

Good luck on the build, I'll be checking it out!

Not much has happened lately. I got some aluminum floor pans and made a new lightweight battery tray, that's about it. It'll be basically a waiting game till March 10, that's when it's going to the cage builder.

Pm sent... several days ago.

Well not much has been going on lately, this afternoon I rebuilt the Vanos with new Beisan seals, also replaced the valve cover gasket while I was in there. I haven't driven it with the new seals, but it started... so that's a good sign. :stickoutt No pics of the Vanos as there isn't much to show, no sludge in the top end(or bottom end) though.

What I've done in the past(and will continue to use) is use a modified 2" rubber trailer ball cover with 1/2 a roll of electrical tape over it. I left it off because I'm going to paint the whole battery tray/bucket area with "rust bullet" as there's some rust down there :( .

The battery light remains on, I'm not sure what's causing it, the alternator is charging...

Tonight I made this new oil cooler mount because it needs to be "isolation mounted" and the previous one wasn't. I might it end scrapping it since I'm not too crazy about it... but it does work.

After cutting them the aluminum was kind of scratched and didn't look that great. I tried spray painting them but I kept on getting little bumps in the paint. Then a friend of mine recommended vinyl...

Since the main hoop down tubes will be going to the bulkhead I had to move all the wires on the passenger back end of the car. It wouldn't have been that big of a deal but all the wiring is continuous through the trunk. So I had to pull all the wires out of the trunk along with a wire that runs outside behind the bumper, and then rerun them again.

You'll be fine. Car will probably be completely different experiance than what you're used to, but in a good way.

I was just thinking about it. Man we have a lot of JP drivers in TX. A quick count of JP cars in our region:

Greg S e46
Dick H e36
Franklin J e36
Andy P e36
Brian B e30
Nick P e30
Will A e30
Glenn C e30
Don S e30
Myself e30

I sure I'm forgetting a person or two. That's 10 JP cars I can think of though. Dam we should be in for some good racing this year!!

I would say option 3.5 with a figure 8 weld(just enough space inbetween the two for a weld). There was a miss communication between the owner and employee and the owner left and when he returned it was already welded up. Think I'll catch any flak for it?

EDIT, I don't think I will, "There may be a small gap between tubes to allow welding 360 degrees around each tube."

What are you painting the interior with?

I'm going over to Por15 in a couple minutes to pickup everything I need to paint my car. They have a new single part product called FlexCote, it looks promising. I think i'm going biting the bullet and going white.

Yup, the car should be finished by then.

Ugh, taping off the interior was a huge PITA and is still not 100% done. I got antsy and started priming the back half of the cage, but it became unbearable after a few minutes even with the garage door open, fans, and a respirator. I think I'll do it outside tomorrow. I also got the passenger door panel cut out and primed.

+1 to good ventilation. I pushed mine out in the driveway.

I used a combination of kitchen plastic wrap, tin-foil, painters tape, and trash bags.

The cage is about 75% painted, should finish it tomorrow (you can see the primer/paint transition on the roof diagonal). I also painted the door panel with black Rustoleum appliance epoxy but it came out looking like shit do to the crappy spray heads they use on their cans(paint globs), oh well, it's just a door panel.

Stickers should go on tomorrow and then it's off to get the sunroof filled in.

Roll cage is painted(minus the spots that I noticed I missed once I removed the tape/paper :shifty ), dash is in(which the cage guy did a pretty crappy job of cutting), and the seats are in. Then I noticed it was midnight and that I hadn't eaten dinner so I called it quits. Car goes to the body shop for the sunroof tomorrow.

Yeah, she has skills with applying stickers and roll bar padding.

Me, not sure what I'm good for. But I'm glad you got it wrapped up in time for an impressive rookie weekend.

Edit: Ashley say's she wants half your winnings.

When you recover snag some pics and update the thread. I'm curious to see what the completed car looks like. :)

Congrats on the results also.

Holding a fire extinguisher and being my eyes because my glasses are completely fogged up? Making a way to fuel my car quicker is next on the list.

What would she like from HMS?

This is copy/pasted so some of it may sound weird:
With 2 hours and 45 minutes of sleep I made it to the track and got my annual tech and event tech done, but missed my first practice session. I made the second practice, and then qualified right after lunch. I qualified first, but only because the true first qualifier(Hunter) was DQ'ed for leaving the pits before being released(so he started at the back). Then it was race time(30 minutes, I started 5th IIRC), for 90% of the race it was me and 2 other cars nose to tail(me at the back). Hunter caught up to me and finally got by me on the second to last lap giving him the JP win, me 2nd.

I wake up Sunday, walk outside, and the ground is soaked and it's misting. By the time I get to the track the misting has stopped. I decided to skip the first practice since I was too lazy to unload the car from the trailer and it was wet(MSR is one of the slickest tracks in the country when wet). I qualified 2nd in my class(1st was Hunter) and 4th overall(3rd was Hunter), I get the lead on him and hold him off for ~25 minutes and then he spins behind me, whew what a sigh of relief! He pits(mandatory 5 minute) right after he spins, I stay out until he comes back out, then I pit. I add about 2 gallons of fuel(I meant to add more but that's another story), have tfro check my pressures(44--> 39 :yikes: ), get back harnessed in with a few seconds to spare, and I'm off. No cars behind me in sight, I've got the JP win in the bag. A few laps later I see a car black car catching up behind me. Each lap he's gaining, who is it? No way, how the hell did Hunter(actually it's Riley, but he's co-driving Hunters car) catch me? His front bumper is at my back tire turning into Big Bend(or so I think, he was probably further back in reality), I decide to give him a car width. I'm on the outside and get sideways mid corner, catch it, but my trajectory is such that I'll run out of track out. I drive the car straight off of the outside at about 80mph and get back on, I lost about 4 seconds with that little excursion. Hunter/Riley gets past with 8 laps to go. At this point it's damage control, I know I've lost, but now it's how much will I lose by. In the end Hunter/Riley finishes 8 seconds ahead of me in 3rd overall(1st JP), I'm in 4th overall(2nd JP)).

I was happy that I did a 1:23.8 in the enduro, then I saw that Riley ran a 1:21.8! Well I guess all I need now are cams, exhaust, software, JRZ's, 18X9's, Stoptechs, and 265 R1's/Z214's! I'm happy with my times though considering I was on 235 RA1 scrubs, SA Konis(525/550), and stock brakes(which have zero consistency). Next planned race is 2 months off...

i've had a big rock puncture the stock bumper grill; placed the screen behind and no worries anymore. if it bothers you just paint it black.

hell, just wait till you get your first tire wall damage....then looks become less important. :)
