Today while driving home on the north tollway I noticed a black bmw creeping up behind me. As he passed me I see the ///M6 badge and middle located exhaust pipes so I immediately decide to have a little fun and see what the M6 has. We both give each other the thumbs up and move up the tollway nearing 100 MPH. Not really a race or anything like that but to say the least I was suprised that a car 20+ years old can keep with an E46 M3. The deep dish rims and styling cues are amazing when you consider this car debuted in the early mid 1980's.

The specs for the are equally amazing even by todays standards.

286 BHP @ 6500 RPM
246 Ft-lbs @ 4500 RPM

0-60 mph 6.6 sec
Top Speed 158 mph

If by chance the owner of that black M6 sees this please chime in and tell us more about your car.

It looked like this except black.

I always dream of owning one :love1 I would be happy if I have a excellent condition manual 635CSi (as a matter of fact I just looked at an auto. one today).

BTW the US spec. M6 is 256 (or 260?) HP. w/ slightly different final gear ratio to make up of the "lost" power. However, nothing a Dinan or Contfiti (sp?) chip can't fix :12:

If I can have a M-shark as a daily driver and a M Roadster for the weekend :mdrbig

What he said!!!

I own an '84 633, manual, and when i finish this restoration, I'm gonna find me an M6 .

Yes, the US spec version from 87-88 was

256 Hp. Easily modified W/ dinan chip or other to 300hp or so.

The 286 HP was the euro spec version (84-85?), higher comp engine.

There was a guy at the Southeast gathering of these cars (6ers')
that had a dinan twin turbo job M6. De-tuned a bit to 475 hp. It was a real slug from what I'm told. :biglaughb

Excuse my ignorance, please, but was the old M6 motor a 3.5 liter V8 or I6? I honestly don't know...

s38 I6 w/ individual throttle bodies. It is derived from the S88 on the M1.

24 valves on the M version vs 12 valves for the stock M30 motor too.

There is a mint m6 parked at my train station (exact car as in Brian's pict) every morning. The guy even drove it over the winter - car was covered in salt!

There's one for sale in CT $15k.

m6 question here, dont see em often, but let's say any one of us got one. are they daily drivers? vs an e30 m3 as a daily driver? let's assume e30 m3 and m6 are a tad under 100k mi? parts prices? anyone know if insurance is high. just a few questions. sorry bout that. could you beat most rice out on the highway?

Im also kinda wondering about weight. M6s weigh like 3500 lbs or something. I am sure it would still handle awesome, but probably not as nimble as a e30 M3. Just a guess though. Anybody know more about this?

Sr20, how does one become a member of the BMW cigar and gun club?

You are correct about the handling issue. My 6er is prepped for the track, but a similarly prepped E30 will outhandle the 6er.

I recall reading that they handle like a 80's t-bird.

They look real good though.

Yeah they definetly look awesome, I was just surprised to find out that they weigh 3500 lbs. That one that was near me sold. I was getting all excited. Oh well.

BLASPHEMER!!!!!!! :D :D Fords handle like the trucks they came from.

BMW's handle like the race cars and airplanes they were designed from...

NOw to answer the M6 questions: They are hella expensive to maintain. While the E30 M3 was relatively limited production, the E30 was NOT. They made hundred of thousands, perhaps millions of those cars during production years.

THe 6er E24 OTOH, was limited production it's entire life. THey only produced about 85,000 of the BODIES worldwide between 1976 and 1989 when production stopped :(

THey only produced about 1550 american M6's between 87-88.

THe E24 beyond 82 (if I'm remembering date correctly) is based on the E28 chassis, so those parts are relatively interchangeable, however, 6er exclusive parts you will pay through the nose for.

THe M6 motor from that era, in american trim Produced only 256 HP. THe European Version, 286.

The American versions can be chipped to 300+HP, so they can be quite potent.

THere are several that are used a daily drivers, I use my 84 as a DD, but will retire it from daily use here in about a year when I finish the restoration.

I use my M6 as a daily driver. Works fine. As long as you maintain it like any other car, it will last a long time. My M6 has had a bit of suspension work done, and it lowere a little, sls removed, and it will out handle lots of cars. I have taken it in some back roades with friends, and scared the shit outa them. They handle suprisingly well for there size and weight. Maybe not as good for auto X cause of size, but I like the feel of a larger car on a big track as opposed to one of the 80's M3's. Plus with my chip, and removed cat (around 300 HP) and the steap ratio rear diff, this thing will haul serious ass, especially for a 15 year old car with 139,000 miles on it!!

Was there an older guy driving? We just finished working on a black M6 that was kept garaged for a long while, now it works beautifully and the guy that owns it drives it more than his other cars. Also he once commented that "it doesn't really come alive until you hit 80". This is coming from an 80 yr old man!! And his car came from Germany and has all of the words/text on it in German, which was pretty cool. To me, at least. It probably wasn't him that you saw, but seeing this thread got me thinking about his M6.

That's the most recent M6 I've seen

hey guys...I have been looking into buyin gone of these puppies for a while now, but I am having trouble finding one that I really like (not that there are many to choose from) I was wondering, are there any typical problems with these cars? You know, like certain parts that are sure to go? Also, I saw one of your guys removed the "SLS"??? Is that some kind suspension leveling systemn like the m5 has? ANyone know if a good site that has reviews on these cars? TIA...bob:redspot

Rust, rust, rust! That's the big problem And the SLS. Of course that is easily remedied by a standard suspension setup.

I think the guy you were typing about lives in my apartment complex. I've been hoping to catch up to him because I know a lot of people who whould pay top dollar for this car. Man is it clean. All stock...not a scratch on it! Flawless.
