...and why?

Considering possibilities on the peninsula, Fremont or South Bay area. Questions, comments, criticisms?

In alameda.. because I don't need to go far to get service.

Seriously... how's about Oakland near Hegenberger... close to 880. Centrally located to southbay, valley, northbay, and the city.

edge is in the east bay area, so I'd defintley say south bay or penisula.

not that much activity in South bay/ Penninsula, Id say south of fremont or milpitas

build one by my house or by my work. The current 5 minute drive is too much

I would say Milpitas area since that would put you between the southbay (saturated as it is) and Edge in the East Bay. I would say Concord but the demand wouldnt be so high IMO. I think a shop Genesis just opened up there and they seem like they are struggling.

milipitas is pretty close to BRR along with other well-established tuner shops in the san jose area.

i vote somewhere along the penninsula, if you get the rep going there's lots of bmw folks in the city who are getting majorly screwed by our local dealer (BMW SF) and would likely be interested in engaging in business..

then again a major factor i'd consider is the amount for a lease so wherever is cheaper, pass on the savings with quality service and it will always draw people no matter where the location

Well, everyone wants a shop nearby their work or home, I know that's true for me. South Bay/Peninsula would be an absolute gift; Milpitas/Fremont area would be fine as well. I drive 30+ minutes to Edge now, an hour if there is traffic (which there always is on the 880>238>580 route), and 40 minutes longer that than if I'm coming from Santa Cruz and not the South Bay. I'll drive almost anywhere for a good shop with techs that I trust.

In response to some of the other comments regarding other shops in close proximity, there will always be other shops nearby that do BMW's anywhere you go, well-established or not. Of course this is a serious business consideration but I tend to believe in survival of the fittest when it comes to this. I'm sure there are other BMW shops around Edge but you never hear about them because there are so many more happy customers serviced by Edge.

I like Edge too, but with my work schedule it does not give me enough time to get out there because they are clossing by the time I get there when I get outta work, unless I take a day off.

they want to work on nice cars. not get shot or carjacked.

i'm in the east bay concord/walnut creek area and traffic to edge does suck ass so its usually around an hour

One consideration (assuming that you are not going to provide loaners) would be to try and locate the shop near to BART or CalTrain so that people who are leaving their car overnight can get to and from the shop conveniently

Very good point and just so people know, when they get that new staion finished for Dublin/ Stoneridge Mall BART, there will be a parking garage about 200 yards from EDGE.

Honestly, I'd say anywhere that is affordable to rent out or buy a shop, thats not too far from the major areas. Cause if you do good work for a decent price, customers will come.

seems like the rest of you guys really like Edge, looks like I'll be giving them a call soon, wasn't too pleased with the service I've gotten with my car so far at all the shops I've been to (including some of the more "reputable" ones on this forum)...maybe its just my experiences

every person is going to tell you to make it close to their house.
do some research, find out where the most activityis.
Or find out the main places where people are into this kinda stuff, and slap it right in the middle of all of them, so they all have equal driving times to get there.
No matter where you put it though, people are gonna complain that its to far of a drive

Peninsula. Maybe Foster City since it's close to the bridge and would allow easy access for everyone.

Good market research question - but try this idea a la Lowes/Home Depot...

1. Number of Business Parks (BMW Prime Ownership Demographic)
2. Number of BMW Dealerships (Potentially unhappy client base)
3. Number of European Shops (Competitors)

Edge Motorworks in Dublin dropped right into a hotbed of clients. Erik and Gordon's shop barnstormed right out of the gate, no down months at all. And given Bishop Ranch and Hacienda business parks were within a 4 mile radius, and EVERYONE hates going to Pleasanton BMW for service... well the success story never really needed to be written...

It just needed to be published... per se.
