AP/Honors student (in HS), so I want to be able to somewhat represent my achievements and potential in a well-paying job.

In other words, fast food doesn't cut it for me.

Any suggestions or leads from any of you guys?

Thanks!

Btw, I'm in Natomas.

your in HS, it doesnt matter really what your grades are, you will likely end up with the same shitty job a dropout with a GED might get.

I already expected that to be the most common answer!
But is there a chance I can get a job that's a bit better than that?

Intern. Cant stress that enough. Job experience will get you further during a future interview than any amount of honors classes, diplomas, gold stars, smiley faces, etc... Look hard and you can find a paid one.

Intern is definately nice, and after school tutoring is good too, if your down to help little kids...

I actually love children! (No Michael Jackson)
How much will a paid internship pay usually? And where would I start?
NSR AJ, where do you work?

Thanks for the help so far!

Thanks for the tutoring idea.
I really hate math, though I'm good at it.
Away from tutoring, what else can I do?

Pretty much if you have no work experience you're going to end up with some shit job in retail or something. Employers don't give a shit about high school grades... I'd try costco, their starting pay is up to 11/hr now I think, plus you get time and a half on sundays.

I work as a Sony Rep

I work at best buy, we had one of your reps come by and tell us about the accommodations Sony gives us. :D

<3 Sony/Best Buy accommodations

btw OP apply at Best Buy, not a bad place to start of with your first job. They pay well and train you in whatever department you get placed in. You literally don't need to know anything about products because of their in-store training really helps.

I have applied to Best Buy before, but maybe my personality test thing didn't go through?
Impossible!
Everyone loves me!

How are you supposed to answer the tests?

Btw, is there a way for any of you to help me into Best Buy?

Was he a taller Caucasian man? He was a cool guy, he took like an hour to go over the Alpha 100, then gave us tons of pamphlets and free stuff.

There should be a section on who "referred" you to best buy, you can go ahead and put my name in there and b.s. how long you known me and what not;

Carlos Ruiz
Digital Imaging Specialist
Store # 1423

You should apply for Digital Imaging (Camera's & Camcorders). Its useful and actually pretty fun, depending on your supervisor.

They renew the application process every 45 days, but I would apply to different Best Buy's around the area.

I made money throughout highschool doing odd jobs for relatives/friends/neighbors etc

you can probably make money by doing some of these

lets see..

bio/math tutor for middle schoolers (10/hr)

teaching piano/guitar(15/hr)

community pool lifeguard(8/hr) ---> hated it

ebaying stuff ($$$)

I was in the same boat as you in HS ... 4.2GPA with AP courses and the pres of various clubs around campus

do the best you can, because once college rolls around, you will have less time to work on earning money.

maintennance on bimmers = $$$$ so you better save up

Carlos, any tips on how to answer the questionnaire? I'm really interested in working at BB anyway, applied a few times. Thanks!

Yoshi, I feel you! However, it's winter and I can't swim.
I'm selling my Air Jordans collection ($200-300 a pair!!), and I'm still feeling like I'm struggling. Because I know it will be finite.

Answer the questions how you think they want to hear. If you have to bullshit, then by all means, bullshit. I know I did, and it worked. Best Buy looks for people that can work well in teams, and that can lead well. As long as you can take orders and not talk back, then you'd be golden.

To be honest, January is a bad month to apply anywhere, BB especially because we just released all of our seasonal staff. Well, it's true for my store because we just opened up in October. It may not be the case for BBs in your area though.

BTW, if your Bilingual, you'll have 83278462378% more of a chance of them calling you into an interview. Apply for the "Customer Assistant (CA)" position if you know more than one language, stores always need and can use them.

Just keep applying until they call you (remember, the cycle of your application being in the system is recycled every 45 days, but I would also try applying at other stores).

If you'd like, I can check out our JOS (Job Opening System) tomorrow for positions that are open in you BB District.

A JOS search would be great. I'm in Sacramento. 5 minutes from the Natomas (North Freeway), and 15 from the Arden one.

apply to be a bus boy at a really nice restaurant. You make base pay, + tips from the servers that you help out.

Something really odd that not a lot can say they have done:

I am 17 and the minute i could, I grabbed my work permit at 15 and started coaching gymnastics at my gym. Moved this year to a bigger one and make decent income (10.5 an hr base) and I do privates withstudents for 30 an hour.

I did gymnastics for about 5 years and dance too, so kinda went with it. Now I just do dance and nice that I can stick with gymnastics and still teach both, while making a decent living for a 17year old!

Best thing about this job is the flexible hours. Kids who are your students most likely get out of school around the same time you do and classes are an hour long, so you can schedule hour long blocks at your advantage. Nizee :D

But when I turn 18 and beginning over the summer, I am going to cut back on the hours I am at the gym and pick up a job at my friends local Europeans auto mechanics shop. He has seen work I have done with brakes and suspension and wants me to work part time for him with those areas. Wow i get to make a living working on bimmers... Wohooooo

So I searched the JOS at BB and the only store really hiring is the Folsom store. :(

If you interested, they are looking for MHT (Magnolia Home Theater) Sales People. That might actually be a good thing though, because someone from a neighboring BB would probably apply for it. Leaving you with a perfect spot near you.

I'll keep you posted on what I see on JOS in your area if you want.

I'll give Costco a try.
I think I've already mentioned earlier, but I want at least two of the following:

Hot chicks
Very useful discount
Good pay (around $10 an hour)

And no fast food. Restaurant hosting, cafe stuff is cool though.

then you need a job in retail

hit up various malls and pick up applications. spend at least a whole day picking them up and filling them out so you can drop them off the next day

keep your fingers crossed and MAYBE you might be able to choose from the employers who called you

My mom got me an accounting internship at her old work. I've been doing that for a little over a year. Plus I'm homeschooled so I pretty much started the 8-5 thing when I was 16 (18 in a few weeks) haha. I'm still at $10/hour but I'm supposed to get a bump up to $12 once I'm 18.

Anyways, the point is to ask parents, relatives, friends etc. for jobs. My dad told me he could get me an electrician apprenticeship easily, and my uncle could hire me at his landscaping company. Course, I went with the cushy office job. Hey, my boss makes $300k/year at a fairly stable job (CFO [chief financial officer] for a construction company) and he started out like me.
