I have read many posts here but really did not find much relating to audio upgrade. I saw a post that mentioned that the amp is located next to the battery. I don't see one. I just picked up an '07 z4 Coupe last month. The bass really needs an upgrade. My inclination now is to tap the remote from the nav unit. If you have DYI on how to reach the nav unit from the back, please post it. BTW, the grill to the sub behind the seat can be removed w/ a flat screw driver, right? Much thanks in advance.

P.S.I traded in an '07 Acura TL Type -S for a manual z coupe. One can never compare the pleasure of driving a RW drive.

I just ran a new one from an empty slot in the fuse block behind the glovebox. Its pretty easy to run it straight back the passenger side. I also ran the RCAs for my new deck and a few other lines through there while I was at it.

I also came from an Acura, but a TSX.

FWIW, there have been a number of posts regarding the poor base performance in the coupe. This is apparently due to lack of room for the bass waves to generate properly in the confined cabin, rather than any real deficiency in the system itself.

Before you go to a lot of trouble, you might consult with some folks who have installed upgraded subs and see what they think.

I've also read several posts by owners that were disappointed in the bass, however after the subs have "broken in" they've been much more satisfied. My bass definitely sounds better now over the first day I had the car (have ~2k miles now).

It is true, if all you want is a stereo switched remote line, just grab the white wire at pin 10 at the amp. The amp is between the battery and the rear trunk wall. Its black so it blends in, but its there. Its about the size of a PS2 (the original one).

Thanks for all of the help and comments. I have an Infinity basslink that was removed from the Acura. I am happy w/ the bass it produces, the moderate weight of the unit and the minimal space it requires. Will have to play around this weekend to install it.

You are the man! Saved me a lot of time since the wires are so tightly fit together leading to the amp. There is no way to figure out the exact wire even after you locate the tip (remote end). With the extra bass, the sound system has improved quite a bit. I didn't bother to figure out which is the speaker wires. I just connected the LOC straight into the wires connecting to the sub.

It IS easy! Look at the harness again, on the side there are 2 tabs. Separate them and 2 flat pin connectors (black and gray) will separate and slide out of the slide-in connector. From here you can even easily pull the pins out, thats how I pulled them out to do my re-wiring.

Whats a "Infinity basslink" ? I'm assuming some kind of bass booster? Any info on it? Price? Review? Thanks

EDIT: Did a quick google search looks like the Basslink is a self-contained powered subwoofer. Looks like a very interesting way to add some kick to the stock stereo.

Back to my original question, how'd you get it all hooked up? Care to show some pictures? Thanks

The subs really don't get better (break in)...

You can also get even worse sound trying larger subs, as the space simply doesn't allow for larger sections to move air correctly.

I replaced mine twice and the Sub that worked best by far was the JL Audio 6WO...

It's only a 6 but in that space performed better than two high end aftermarket 8 and 10's in clean pure sound delivery.

Note too that your stock low end and the BMW amp (if premium) is a special higher voltage unit to work with the Phillips subs that are stock. Running aftermarket outsides subs that are not made for working with the same types of output can cause crap sound too.

I now have two Rockford Amps.

I'm thinking of fiberglass. Has anyone put a 10" in one of the corners with fiberglass? Seems like it would be hard to get over 1 cu foot in a box in the corner without it sticking way out.

I haven't seen any pictures of Z setups with fiberglass, does anyone have any links they could share.

The guys from Rockford laid out the space required for propper performance of a 10 that would handle and respond better than a pair of 6wo in stock spaces and it eliminated 1/3 of the available (floor) space in the back of the coupe...

Check out the attached picture of the Basslink. I hope the attachment is alright as my first time posting picture.

BTW, What do you guys think is wrong or not wrong with the wheels on my car? I bought the car brand new but don't how the wheels got there and am trying to get the dealer to put back the original 203 on. So far haven't heard anything from them yet. Next time I would do a little more research before I step foot on the dealer's lot. All comments re wheels are welcomed. :lol

I am sorry that I did not take any pictures during the installation. It took me about 2 hours with the help of Reach point out where the remote (white) wire is located. I'll describe it as follows:
1) remove the tail lamp covers in the interior of the trunk (just twist the plastic knob);
2) remove the center cover (there are 4 screws) that sits right over the hatch lock:
3) lift the interior cover inside the car (the right side of the car);
4) just loosen the left cover inside the car;
5) lift the carpet and the the amp sits right by the wall;
6) (now this is the most time consuming part) remove the wiring harness that's attached to the amp by detaching the little plastic snap. Once this plastic snap is detached, you can easily pull out the wire harness;
7) locate the white wire and run this as the remote amp turn on lead;
8) run your speaker line and make sure you use a LOC as the sound is far better than the high level input. Follow Reach's instructions above on how to locate the speaker wires and tap them. I think he mentioned the black and gray ones. I ran mine straight to the wires that are attached to sub);
9) run your ground (there is a bolt toward the back near the right tail lamp cover);
10) run your hot wire to the car battery;
11) test your system and calibrate your bass and make sure you do it with the engine running to make sure you don't hear any garbage like hissing sound); and
12) reassemble everything.
I really love the system now that bass is added to the control. Before the bass sounds really flabby.
