Is there any other way to change the belt on the car without taking off the fan?
Does anyone have the tool I can borrow for a day around San Jose?

I usually just use a 12in screwdriver across a couple of the pulley bolt heads and a big old crescent wrench....
my $0.02...

I have the 32mm wrench that fits the fan clutch. You can pick a 32mm wrench up at Sears for ~$30, or PM me and you can swing by Mountain View to pick mine up. The screwdriver technique may work for West coast cars, but my "seen East coast winters" fan clutch didn't want to come off without a fan clutch tool. The fan clutch tool that Autozone rents out works on the bmw bolts (in one orientation, they're in a rectangle). Good luck, it can be a 5 minute procedure or a 1hr one if things go badly :)

ahh okay cool thanks. I'll give you a call! I have the one from autozone, but i'm not sure if it fits into the car. i'll try that first :). Do you have your own shop? (Clustermonkey)
If you hold the 32mm wrench on the fan clutch, hammer down on the top of it, while pushing slightly towards the right, it will come loose easily (little trick a tech taught me).

You can go to a bike shop and ask them for a head wrench. It'll be perfectly thin, but 32mm. Best part is that it will cost you between $5 and $10. Make sure you get a long one so you can tap it with a hammer.

Spray the heck out of it with penetrant, then hammer it.
