View Full Version : BMS Exhaust Review
dtothepowerofp 01-12-2008, 09:10 PM I got the key to a friends M Coupe thrown to me today and got to check out his newly acquired BMS Exhaust. At startup it sounded like a large dog barked at me. (a very welcome sound!) With a few blips of the throttle I knew this is what my M was going to have soon. So I took it for a 4-5 mile drive and tried to put it through different revs and situations to see if it was going to be too loud for me. From around 2K-3K at part throttle there is a little bit of boom in the car but I wouldn't call it droning. It really didn't bother me at all. Heel and toe downshifts are awesome. When blipping the throttle that same dog was barking again. It was easier to rev match for me since I could hear the engine finally. At slow cruising speed in 1st gear the car was very low key and didn't raise attention. At idle it just sounds deep and mean. I was expecting more of the rasp so many M's have with exhaust systems but from in the car it was just a nice deep baritone. I drove with the windows up and down and really liked the tone at any rpm. Wide open throttle through 1st and 2nd was really impressive. I rode in an M Coupe last year that had SuperSprint's sport exhaust and the BMS is louder but in my opinion it sounds great. I'll be ordering mine on Monday. Thanks for trusting me with your car Bill!
Glad you enjoyed it, it was nice to hit the mountains today and reap some of the benefits of the mods I have done ;)
bimmer07 01-13-2008, 02:21 PM would you say this is better than supersprint????? in loudness and quality?? post when you get yours.
Chief01 01-13-2008, 02:47 PM Bill - Checked out your site and it looks like you've been busy. I'm interested in BMS exhaust system for my 07 Z4 3.0SI Coupe but I went to their site and couldn't find anything on exhaust systems. Think you could direct me. Thanks

Call Chris at BMS and see if they have an exhaust planned for this car, contact info is on their website and he also posts on Bimmerfest under user Chris@BMS:

Bill - what parts did you exchange for BMS? Mufflers only? x-pipe? cats? headers? Also - what was the pricing like?
thanks - Roland

I replaced the X-Pipe and the mufflers, initial release pricing for mufflers and X-Pipe is $1898 and final pricing will be $1998 after first 10 are sold:

My write-up for R&R is here and you will be able to see what was removed and installed:

I would agree with Dan's review, the exhaust sounds great and allows for more participation in the driving experience ;)

dtothepowerofp 01-24-2008, 10:53 AM Well, I got my BMS exhaust and installed it yesterday. It took about 1 hour. It's well built and sounds great! As far as HP gains I'd guess there's around 5-10 hp but I'm going by feel rather than dyno. Rev matching is much easier now. Once I get some miles on it I'll report back.
pageoneresults 01-25-2008, 09:43 PM I just left Chris at BMS with my 2007 SGM Z4 M Coupe and new BMS exhaust. Wow! I really like it. Definitely a performance exhaust note and one that get's a lot of attention. I drove down PCH a little while ago and the looks were what I expected, even from other BMW owners. The Coupe is a completely different experience once it is allowed to breathe a little more freely.
According to Chris, 8 HP and 15 LBS of torque, those are the dyno figures. The gain in torque is noticeable. As soon as I stepped on the go pedal, I knew I was in a different automobile. :)
did anyone find anything out about a non-M version of this exhaust? it would seem as though it would be a relatively "easy" conversion. Easy is in quotes just because i deal with manufacturing (or should i say manufacturing issues) on a daily basis and i know that nothing is ever that easy. haha.
anyway, i'm still curious about the non-M application... :)

I'd agree with these figures. I don't think it gave any more low end power but the mid and high range feel better. Mine burbles a lot when revs are coming down, off throttle. After a few track events it should be back firing. Of course, I removed my rear "resonators" prior to getting my exhaust so I have a little less back pressure then others.
lexlaws 01-30-2008, 10:01 PM Anybody with an M coupe or roadster have the BMS exhaust on their car, living anywhere near Santa Clarita, California? Would love to hear it before I decide to buy... then again, i guess i live pretty darn close to Santa Ana...
gokartmozart 01-30-2008, 11:59 PM Wow, Bill, nice webpage for your MC. Gave me lots of ideas... good ideas!

This seems incredibly optimistic when SuperSprint says their exhaust wont produce any gains... do we have dyno results to go along with this? If they could substantiate half of that, it would be a significant factor to picking this exhaust over a SuperSprint or Eisen...
Suneal 02-26-2008, 07:00 PM Of course, I removed my rear "resonators" prior to getting my exhaust so I have a little less back pressure then others. Do you have any videos of your car with its stock exhaust sans resonators?
dtothepowerofp 02-26-2008, 07:27 PM There really wasn't much difference from stock. Maybe 1 db louder but hardly worth mentioning.
car62 02-26-2008, 10:09 PM I just put the BMS mid pipe and mufflers on my Z4M - they did a great job with the sound tuning, it sounds really sporty like a traditional 6 cylinder race engine on hard acceleration, but it's pretty quiet on cruise and not bothersome at all. No droning and none of that tinny raspy sound that the M3 exhaust had. Also it does not sound like a buzzy little rice rocket. I wanted to drive with the window down just to enjoy the sound. As far as any power gain, it might have a slightly better response in the middle RPM range, which is consistent with what they are claiming. If you are looking for a big difference from the stock factory system, I would highly recommend this product. Also, Chris at BMS is a pleasure to deal with.
If I can figure out how to upload a video to youtube, I might try to post one.
