Is it possible to use copper piping to add a intercooler to a SC M3?

View Full Version : Intercooler Piping on SC M3 jagsm3 04-15-2003, 11:19 PM Is it possible to use copper piping to add a intercooler to a SC M3? EMC 04-15-2003, 11:34 PM Why not use aluminum? I'm sure its much cheaper...and lighter. jagsm3 04-16-2003, 01:33 PM I am asking about copper because I have found a source where I can buy all the bends I need. rayztoy 04-16-2003, 06:24 PM Good question! But I don't see any reason why you can't unless it holds the heat more than aluminum. :) rayztoy 04-16-2003, 06:26 PM Why not purchase from AA their intercooler and piping for there s/c. Then, modify the connections from the s/c and to the throttle body? :) zenon 04-16-2003, 06:44 PM corrosion (depends on exact alloy i guess) could be bad for the motor if sucked in (pretty sure you can chrome dip copper), my biggest question is sealing. What are you going to do solder? may be tough to get a big ole copper pipe to seal. jagsm3 04-16-2003, 07:45 PM I already asked AA and got no response. I would use clamps and rubber to seal the joints. stimpee 04-16-2003, 10:24 PM I would be quite careful to make sure that the temperature of the air did not begin to "weaken" the copper, and that the wall thickness, etc was adequate to carry the internal pressure loads (and also the shock waves that occur when closing the throttle) in the tubing. Find out what the aluminum thickness and yield strength are, and make sure that the copper meets or exceeds it's performance capability... Steve BoostFed325 04-17-2003, 03:26 AM dude. i tried to make piping for the longest time. i had it mandrel bent. got silcone bends from jc whitney.. and a few other things. its a bitch and a half. just get AA water injection if you want to cool the charger. X'z95M3 04-17-2003, 09:13 AM Ummm, after awhile of the heat exposure I would think it would turn green... and correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't copper poisoness when when it is heated ?? I would think that the 200+ temp. discharge from a blower might be hot enough to cause this. So hold your breath !!! jagsm3 04-17-2003, 02:51 PM Thanks for all the responses. Steve - have you conssidered selling your intercooler setup seperately? Thanks Jag |
