View Full Version : Abandoned/Empty airfields in GA.
VakhariaINC 01-11-2008, 01:14 PM Found this link, and thought it would be useful. Try to keep the racing off the streets, and make it safe. :)

I also checked that out about a month ago, and most a few are converted into housing...etc. I've also been using GoogleMap satellite view, for about the whole area to look, and it-aint-pretty. I forget the name of the website, but it had shown abandonded lots/shopping centers...etc. No luck on that one either. (but it was a few years dated)
There was one HUGE lot showing, it appears to be some sort of massive lot for cars off a rail train over off RT316. That would have been nice.
Thanks much for posting that up.......!
bcart1991 01-11-2008, 01:52 PM Regarding the last one in the NE GA section:
Stone Mtn Tennis Ctr closed last year, IIRC. Might that be available for auto-x?
Uberdude328i 01-11-2008, 01:56 PM I guess you could keep racing off of your streets and on someone else's driveway. They've all been turned into developments.
JuliusPleaser 01-11-2008, 02:45 PM My father used to take us to Gunn so we could play on his race kart. I also learned to drive there in his big-block El Camino.
I haven't thought about that place in years. Thanks for bringing back some good memories. :)
///M3Mike 01-11-2008, 02:54 PM I miss the days when General Aviation was affordable. It's too expensive now and no other hobby compares. :(

PrinceE30 01-11-2008, 05:01 PM Could we get some Google Maps links to some of these places. I'd like to see them a little better...

Have you tried racing?
I grew up around airplanes, was taught to fly on a J3 cub by one of the US Aerobatic team instructors, also had access to a Aeronca Champ pretty much any time through out high school. On top of that my father and his friends built 2 planes. Attended Oshkosh many times during the 80-90's.
After a while, flying was just like learning to drive. Fun and exciting at first, then boring as hell after a few 100 hours. I found that if I couldnt rent/fly some type of aerobatic capable plane or something fast like a Mooney 231 modified to a 261 etc, its just dull and expensive method to sight see.
Of course I dont know what you took out of the hobby and not trying to put it down, but I liked the thrill and excitement of flying but quickly grew tired of it unless I was able to do aerobatics etc. Sadly those planes are a bit pricey. AND not everyone is up for a hammerhead stall or negative g's. Of course I would love to own a plane to make the short hop to Destin and home etc.
Racing on the other hand never grew dull, it provided me some of the same thrills as flying but the challenge never faded etc.

How does flying compare to heroin?

Speeding Car Wrecks on Runway, Kills 5
OCALA, Fla. — A car speeding down a private airport runway ran off an embankment and was airborne for 200 feet before smashing into a tree early Saturday, killing all five young men in the vehicle, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
Investigators did not know whether the BMW was alone or was racing another car on the air strip at the exclusive "fly-in" community of Jumbolair Aviation Estates, where pilot-actor John Travolta has a home, officials said.
According to the preliminary investigation, the car ran off the 85-foot-high embankment at the end of the runway. When it struck the large tree, the car split in half, scattering wreckage over an area of 200 square feet.
Three of the five occupants were ejected, said Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Mike Burroughs.
"It's too early in the investigation to determine a speed and also to determine whether seat belts were in use at the time of the crash," Burroughs said.
He also said it was too early to determine if alcohol was involved. "There was no visible signs of it," Burroughs said.
Two of the five men — ages 18 to 20 — were from Ocala, two were from Fairfield and one was from Anthony, but it was not clear if any of the men lived within the gated community.
Calls to a telephone listing for Jumbolair were not answered Saturday, and there was no immediate response to an e-mail sent to an address listed on the community's Web site.
At the community's black metal gate, a reporter was told over an intercom that no one was available to comment, and was asked to leave.

Those kids were 18-20 and being stupid? Still sad though.
tpattison 01-27-2008, 11:25 AM Good riddance. At least now that they are dead they can't pollute the gene pool anymore. Hopefully they will win this years Darwin Award.
