View Full Version : CMP or VIR in Feb?
Flying Arrow 01-11-2008, 09:44 AM Looking for opinions. I'm hoping to attend either the NASA VIR event in Feb (22-24th) or the BMW CCA at CMP on the same weekend. I'll likely be doing mostly BMW CCA events this year but I'm thinking the NASA event would be a good one to familiarize myself with VIR for the BMW event in April. Also, I want to get at least a couple of NASA events in to be eligible for the Nationals in Sept if I can possibly fit that in.
Which do you go to and why?
Thanks!

Eric1H 01-11-2008, 10:48 AM VIR is a FAR FAR better track. if it were me I'd go for VIR over CMP anytime.
dejablu311 01-11-2008, 10:59 AM NASA SE is doing cmp two weeks before that. why not do both?
if only one then go with VIR.
B.Watts 01-11-2008, 11:05 AM We're planning CMP with the BMW CCA crowd. Not much going on for the faster Mod cars in NASA yet.

Bryan, come on now, you mean to tell me you do not see the 25 Spec E30s as competition for you? I'm insulted.
Actually, there are some very fast cars that come out to that VIR event in Feb because it is one of the first track weekends of the new year. Take a look at the results sheets from the March VIR Full event to see what I mean. (This past year's Feb weekend it was raining so the times are not worth much).
Plus, the VIR event has two sprint races AND a 3 hour enduro, plus if you're really up for some track time, there is the test and tune day on friday which provides a ton of track time for very little cash.

PS. Stickley usually attends, so you can have a chance to see how your S54 does against his...
maxxfish 01-11-2008, 11:58 AM FYI, there are going to be some new Porsche guys joing the high-horsepower ranks of NASA GTS Mid-Atlantic this year. I know of at least a handful of rookie 996 and 997 cars that will be in GTS 4 or 5.
These are guys that have been doing DE's for a couple of years and are ready to step it up. Let's see how they deal with open passing and the American Iron crowd!:evil2

i know derek skea was running 2:02's in his GT3 last feb...i havent heard from him in a while so i'm not sure if he's still doing any nasa events but i did hear that he upgraded to a faster porshce...
most of the really fast cars are not GTS cars though, most run in super unlimited...gts-3 cars were the fastest in gts last march...in july (north course), there were a couple of gts-4 or 5 porsches that were somewhat fast but definitely not as fast as the watts' mobile....
PS. Stickley usually attends, so you can have a chance to see how your S54 does against his...
i havent seen stickley at a nasa vir event in the last couple of years...
i'll be at vir that weekend...i hate missing bmw races but the feb nasa vir event is always a big one and too much fun to pass up...the 3hr enduro always draws a big crowd and it's hard to beat the spec e30 action!
magnetic1 01-11-2008, 12:43 PM Ill be at VIR also. Driving GTS2, GTS3 AND SpecE30. WOOT!
Hey Flying Arrow, you can leave your rig here if it helps you. I'm 8.5 miles from VIR.

There are only rare times when this happens:
1) He runs out of gas.
2) He has a hangover
3) He is sick to his stomach from 2GRL1CUP.

BimmerWorld had to finish the I/P car in a week, they got started late because they were still hung over from Savannah with Mr. White leading the way.......

rare? :confused
Specter325 01-11-2008, 05:12 PM CMP is my home course and I would go to VIR. Cuts three hours off the drive each way as well. Their motto is Fun fast and World class and they are not kidding! Bring your rain shoes though. There could easily be ice or snow at that time of year as well. CMP on the other hand is in a different weather zone and chances of weather that would cancel the event are way smaller.
magnetic1 01-11-2008, 05:25 PM rare? :confused
Yea... he aint no lightweight :P
Flying Arrow 01-11-2008, 07:29 PM Thanks for the input guys. I'm leaning toward VIR as I won't likely be able to go back their in April - Conflict with Mosport BMW CCA event.
There will be more than enough competition for this newbie, and I simply must drive that track.
Cheers,

Yup. A couple of 997 GT3s/cups and 996 Baby cups. It should be interesting.

Wait a minute. Ice or snow?? I'll be driving out of a bunch of that stuff in the great white north. You can't be serious? I can live with rain, but if I drive 12 hours to get to a snowstorm I'll be pissed...
oldMcR 01-13-2008, 11:42 PM Feb 10/11 2006 we got iced out of a DE @ VIR on day one. uncommon but still unpleasant possibility. the following weekend i went to Roebling and it rained 95% of the time i was there.
around here if you don't like the weather, just wait a week or so. it will change.
