topdown323 01-11-2008, 04:14 PM whats ur labor rate? mines $30 hour:) but ur professional, im not
graphicjunkie 01-11-2008, 06:19 PM When I offer up special deals like this to friends and family, I don't typically set a specific rate to be honest. I will go by what it is, and what it takes. I'm not looking to make any kind of real profit. In this case, meet some cool people and help out a fellow enthusiast.
In theory, some jobs I've done for free. Customer has only paid for materials. It's not always like that. If a job is time consuming, of course I'm going to pay myself something.
I'll just put it this way, I've never had any body complain about the price or quality to date!
Magilla 01-11-2008, 06:47 PM How much to paint my E30?
I want to stick with the factory color, so you don't have to worry about the door jambs, under the hood or trunk lid...
SE7EN40RTY 01-11-2008, 10:00 PM Nice, well. Let me ask you this... I have aprice in my head that I've paid for before to a shop, which I and all of my firends frequent all the time with our cars. How much would you charge to repaint the entire front end of a BMw 740i? I've had this done before so I know what price is good. This will include hood, 2 fenders, and a bumper. Let me know. If your price is good, you'll have a lot of work on your hands.
M62pwrdE38 01-11-2008, 10:34 PM Where are you located? I have a couple things on the e30 that need painted and a couple spots that need some PDR.
graphicjunkie 01-12-2008, 01:01 AM Ok, so a lot of questions.
Where are you located?
I'm located in Eaton. That's 8 miles north of Greeley off of HWY 85.
How much would it cost to paint the front end of a 740i.
Not to sound like I'm dodging the question, but realistically, it would depend on what needs to be done to it. is the paint just faded? Is it chipped? Dented? Basically what kind of prep work will need to go into the job. I can't quite give quotes on line like this. I can look at a car and tell you depending on it's condition.
But to humor this, and I will state right now "that this is not a binding quote"...
If the body is in good shape and just the basic chips need to be feathered out. Not needing to be redone from the metal up...I would venture to say something along the lines of about $600. Again, I'm throwing this out there as a favor to fellow Bimmers.
And that's with the materials included.
Don't try and say that it's not a good deal. Let me break it out for ya.
If you were taking it to the "shop down the street", they would pretty much charge you about 5 hours of prep time. And last time I checked, the going rate was 125/hour.
That's just the prep time...then you have paint time. Most paint standards require at least two coats to reach proper mil coverage. So you figure minimum on hour for paint time. Same with clear coat.
So now we're up to six hours. (granted, if the surface needs more TLC than just the quick knock down for grit, then it could be much more.)
six hours at 125 = $875.
Then you have to wet sand the surface, because you want that smooth reflective shine when done. That will take at least two hours.
Then you have the final min. 1 hour to buff.
That's roughly ten hours at 125 equalling $1250. Oh, but that would just be labor. You figure you need roughly 7 oz of paint per panel X 4 panels, at 2 coats...
that gives you a required 56oz of paint...1.8Qts. of paint (2)
Then you have the reducer to mix the paint accordingly. I haven't priced BMW code paint, but most likely it's not an off the shelf House of Color blend, so mix paint is a little more expensive. Let's say $50/ qt. Plus 1Qt of reducer ~$15, The same for clear coat. should match the paint, if not a little more depending on your preference. 2qts clear coat @ ~$28 per can, plus the cost of catalyst....
you figure $260 worth of materials to boot on top of that.
Good deal?
M62pwrdE38 01-12-2008, 02:36 AM Damn, that's a bit of a haul. I'll probably swing by Tuesday though :).
fsmtnbiker 01-12-2008, 03:37 AM Oooh you're close to me.
Once I source my rear wing, I might have to get in touch about painting that, repainting my rear bumper, and a jack plug.
SE7EN40RTY 01-12-2008, 06:10 AM Well not to say it's not a good deal, I get the entire front end painted with light dents removed all for 450.00 from a very well known professional shop in Denver. I've had a lot of work done there, as with all of my friends. They actually are considered one of colorado's best body work shops as well. Not some random shop. But yeah i hope you do well my friend, it's very expensive elsewhere I've been quoted 1250.00 at some shops for the same work. So, at your price it's a great deal, depending on the work. I'm sure you'll do great on the forums.
graphicjunkie 01-12-2008, 05:49 PM email me @ willyb@killerkustoms.com if you intend on stopping by. Want to make sure I'm there if you are going to stop by.
I am doing this on the side until I can muster the courage to leave my full time gig and go full time.
I've done a few show cars, as well as have taken my Harley to smaller shows and won best of class, and best of show. I've never officially competed in any kind of major event like the Thunder in the Rockies, but that's in the plans with two of the hot rods I'm building right now. I did just start a new job, so right NOW I can't predict how fast I can turn a project...still trying to get a feel for my work load. But normally I have a very fast turn around. I did the mustang on my site in three weeks. That's stripping it down to the metal, body work, block sanding to ensure the surfaces are PERFECT, painting the entire car, then going back and doing custom graphics on it....as well as a show shine.
Show shine equals six complete coats of clear coat. Two at a time, wet sanding 100% smooth between applications. This thing looked WET when it was dry. Depth of image was so SICK on it that it looked like you could dip your finger into the flames. The mustang is the one pictured on my front page of my site. **I've NEVER claimed that I can take a picture worth a damn!**
TRR330xi 01-13-2008, 11:44 PM Do any powdercoating at all? I need to get my wheels refinished.
graphicjunkie 01-14-2008, 12:26 PM No, I don't do powdercoating. Sorry.
M62pwrdE38 01-15-2008, 02:21 AM Are you going to be there tomorrow afternoon (say around 2 or 3)? I think I'll be able to drive up there around then.
graphicjunkie 01-15-2008, 02:23 AM Yes, I will be, unless I get called into the office.
Just call me probably an hour ahead of time so I can make sure I'm available.
Cool?
W.
M62pwrdE38 01-15-2008, 02:57 AM I'll call the number on the site, what's the address?
Boostedcorrados 01-15-2008, 08:13 AM What would you charge for a FULL respray? Im talking i bring you a bare body with doors, fenders hood trunk and sunroof lid and the pieces that need to be painted body color. The bodys not straight but i want it perfect in and out. I have OCD with stuff like that.
Id even have you take a look to see what just the body work would be cause i can shoot it and have a booth i just hate body work and would go insane trying to make it perfect.

I can't even begin to quote something like that without seeing it. Bodywork takes time. That can be where a lot of expense comes into play in a paint job. The suburban on my site is a perfect example. That was an off the street customer. No discounts, no bargains. I looked at it, quoted, and when I was sanding the lower quarters discovered that under the paint it was surface cancer. I ended up putting in almost 30 extra hours at no charge to fix what I missed in the inspection.
I'll be quite honest. Like you, I loathe doing body work. So if I wasn't going to paint it, I wouldn't do the body work either. I do this mostly for fun right now, and that just wouldn't be fun! LOL!

Thats all part fo the business my friend.
graphicjunkie 01-15-2008, 02:50 PM Ya know what? I just got an email from a member basically calling me a fake, and questioning my integrity.
What kind of shit is that?
My site is live and for the most part up to date. My product speaks for it's self.
You don't want to "chance" my services because I'm a small time operation or "some random" shop, then fine. Don't. Take your car to some commercial shop that rams as many projects as they can through the door and could cut corners on your car.
Forget I made the offer. I have enough full wage work keeping me busy on top of a full time job and family. I don't need to catch a bunch of shit for giving favors.
graphicjunkie 01-15-2008, 02:50 PM Thats all part fo the business my friend.
Yea, it is. I've lived and learned my share of mistakes on the quoting game. You are absolutely right.
That's why I don't quote jobs without thorough examination now.
M62pwrdE38 01-15-2008, 02:54 PM You going to be there in a couple hours? I still plan on trekking up there if you are there...

That's fucking bogus man. Course, look at it this way...it's one less asshole to deal with. Tell that member to kiss your bimmer lovin all american ass!
cant hit bombz 01-15-2008, 07:11 PM +1 ^
The flames you do are very nice and clean...love the colors on the sportster. One thing you might do is spend a little and get some nice pro shots of the mustang....like you said you're not a photog. and i think it would really help you out with some nice clear shots. I hope you don't let the ignorance of one misguided member to ruin the great deals you are proposing for other members
TRR330xi 01-16-2008, 11:45 PM There's always going to be a few bad apples. Hope you pursue this full-time!
powellsd 01-17-2008, 09:41 AM I wish you were close to me. I need a respray on the e36. Have rock chips and a tad bit of rust starting on the passenger rear wheel well lip.. Other then that car is in awesome shape, no major dents besides a couple of door dings. Which i will soon get this all fixed.
