View Full Version : Sound Deadening Crap Removal?
Ben7117 01-10-2008, 05:33 PM I'm in the process of gutting the interior of my '99 E36 M3, anybody have any
suggestions on how to remove that crap. I bought a heat gun, but was wondering if dry ice is better? I was helping a friend remove his on a RX-7 and the stuff wasn't coming up very easily. Thanks for the help.
TH3 Shifty 01-10-2008, 05:34 PM Dry ice is the best method... find a block.. break it up... leave it on there for about 5-10 minutes.. grab a chizzle.. it will come off in large plates or shatter... easiest way bay far... we just did this a week ago on my friends race car.

....and you can play ROCK STAR when you are done with the dry ice.......Smoke....on the water.....fire in my eyes....:redspot
vinnymac 01-10-2008, 05:39 PM I used a heat gun and a paint scraper and didn't think it was too bad at all.

Ben7117 01-10-2008, 05:46 PM Where can you get dry ice?
JulianK8Z 01-10-2008, 06:04 PM I used a propane torch and a scraper. If you heat it long enough, it comes off with very little effort. Goo Gone works wonders on the glue residue left behind afterwards. It wipes right off.

Google is your friend.

Most seafood departments at your local grocery store should be able to sell you some.
328ischef 01-10-2008, 07:00 PM propane torch and scraper. Heat it up and it will slide right off.
"goo off" at home depot in paint aisle
M3Chef 01-10-2008, 07:04 PM ....or strap an M-80 on each patch of your silly putty and let the games begin! Neighbors will hate you but the kids dig it....The only down side is after your done your car will look like swiss cheese...
fishforlife 01-10-2008, 07:21 PM no way dry ice is easier than heatgun or tourch. the time waiting for the dry ice to work could be better spent removing with a heatgun. i actually was lucky enough to take mine out on a 110 degree day..so im sure the car was a little warmer. the stuff came out with no help.
JClark 01-10-2008, 08:38 PM GOOF Off and Goo Gone are 2 very different chemicals, Goof Off is much more powerful and works better, IMO. Brake cleaner is also a good choice and more easily found in aerosol cans.

SHRUG I'm sure they would all work fine. I got the goo gone in the spray bottle. A couple of sprays, wait about 15 seconds, and wipe right off. I was surprised at how easy it was.

I disagree, I've tried both within the past week on the same car and found the heatgun much easier, faster, and removes almost all material(dry ice leaves small chunks that later have to be removed with a heat gun). 1-2 wipe downs of goof off and it's completely gone. Oh yeah, use a plastic scraper with the heat gun.\
EDIT-I used aerosol Goof Off(labeled as graffiti remover), just spray it on, wait a minute, then wipe off.

+1. heat gun and plastic scrapers is the way. gotta rotate the scrapers as start to get soft when they get too warm. the dry ice method was bad.
propane torch puts flame a little too close to flammable stuff for my tastes.

Goof off is stuff you need to have. Home depot carries it in aerosol and pour bottles. It's about as good as it gets.
Xylene rules.
///Maniac 01-10-2008, 09:22 PM Took it all out in a matter of hours. It's hot, sweaty work, but so satisfying to get that sh!t outta there.

Michael9218 01-10-2008, 10:30 PM You live in New Jersey...back the car out in the freezing weather, let it sit and then chip it out. That's what I did. Waited for a sub 30 degree morning, let the car get nice and cold and the stuff chipped out like peanut brittle. You don't need dry ice when mother nature is providing unlimited freezing potential, and the heat method makes for a gooey mess. Frozen and chipped, there's very little to clean up. It took me no time at all to use brake cleaner to wipe off what was left of the residue.

Rennhaus 01-10-2008, 10:57 PM propane or mapp gas torch just till it bubbles a little, then scrap it off. Lay rags on residue, cover with acetone, let sit and it wipes right off. Or use an orange based remover and a little elbow grease, not the bad after the adhesive breaks down from the torch.

did you get it all? bmw put that stuff everywhere...in every crevice, behind every panel, in every door, under the dash, everywhere! :(
328ischef 01-11-2008, 12:32 AM I changed my mind...
Flame thrower, that will do the trick
///Maniac 01-11-2008, 12:47 AM Doors were gutted, everything was out, dash came out for cage install. Even took the stupid 4x4 inch squares behind where the CD changer were. :mad
Yes, that sh!t is everywhere. You'll be surprised how much it all weighs too.

It takes about all of 30 seconds with each to figure out that GOOF OFF > Goo "Gone".
Xylene is nasty, but it works! There is GOOF OFF in hand "spray bottles", which is not the right stuff. To get the Xylene formula, it has to be the aerosol GOOF OFF. Home Depot, etc.
I think the Goof Off pour bottles are also xylene. Although I find the aerosol spray easier to work with and less likely to spill and make a HUGE mess.
JClark 01-11-2008, 02:12 PM The pour bottles of Goof are xylene too. Home Depot also sells it in gallons for around $20. Worth it since you're going to go through a lot doing the whole car.
Dont let it sit for too long on the paint or especially seam sealer if you dont plan to repaint the car soon after! It'll eat away at whatever you leave it on. I had the bright idea to soak rags in it and leave it on the residue. It worked a little too well.
