where are you guys getting that small plate for gauges that is right below the OBC? I want to pick one up but i cant seem to find a vendor that sells one. If they are home made... what are you using to secure the plate to the console?

thanks

If it's the less than useful sunglass holder location (that I currently have), I used glue. :) Dremel the crap out of the sunglass holder, glue in gauge panel, done. Optional final step: paint black.

Cheers,
Carlos.

Pretty much. Finding the flat plate with the 3 holes makes it much easier of course but that part you could fab up yourself using Home Depot materials. I purchased mine but the place I got it from has long gone out of business.

FYI guys - I will have one of our steering column pods for E36 very shortly - no more looking down to see what your temps are.

I picked up a piece of 1/8" 9x9 black plastic sheet stock for a couple of dollars at McMaster-Carr (http://www.mcmaster.com/) and a couple of small L-brackets. Cut the sheet to size and epoxied the brackets to the back of the sheet. But, like most of my projects, changed my mind and went with A-pillar gauges so I wouldn't have to look down.

This is for a track car but I think it was shaping up pretty nicely before I threw it away.

About Mid-Feb, but I will pick up the tab to expedite for later this month if there is enough interest.

ATI Gauge Pod (http://store.bimmerworld.com/Product899)

That should be the basic details. I will test fit E36 hopefully before we go to Sebring next week.

James, are there any differences between the 52mm and the "universal" pod, besides gauge size?

The bigger the gauge the better, IMO.

I'm interested in this for the E36.

No, but 2-1/16" is kind of the standard.

I've noticed on people's cars doing budget builds who use the ProSport gauges and the usual sunglass holder pod makes it very difficult to see being that the gauge faces are convex, and the plate is flat.

I plan on using the prosports, so my question is this:

If I want to use the sunglass holder do any companies make/plan on making angled holders for the sunglass holder spot on e36s?

When I initially built up the coupe, I moved to it from my sedan an accesory gauge panel. This panel occupies the e36 sunglass pocket and has 3 gauges: Water temp, oil temp and oil pressure.

While I loved having vital engine info available, on track I had to take my eyes of the track and look down to read the gauges. While it worked I was not comfortable moving my eyes that low.

This was again very apparent at one of my track events last year. I had long ago removed the radio and speakers, and in the radio pocket I had a control for a radar dtector and initially some velcro for the traqmate.

Before the event, the radar detector was deemed dead and I pulled all the wiring, including the control in the OEM radio delete panel. In its place went went a cradle for a portable XM receiver. The traqmate was moved down one slot and mounted to another OEM delete panel for the OBC.

Anywho, on the way home after the driving event I gave the gauge thing a lot of thought. Wed. I made a call to the manufacturer of the gauge panel (Edge Motorworks) to see how easily it would lend itself to modification.

I could have modified it, but it would have involved hacking the whole thing apart, so to plan B I went. Use the radio delete panel. Bought an extra set of gauges, measure and drilled the panel and transfered all the wiring.

Much better solution.

I bought the angled pieces from Autometer, check the Summit Racing site or Jegs or wherever you like to order from and just attach those to the flat plate. I ended up only using one for the gauge that sits furthest away.

Leather Z sells a gauge panel and gauges. They aren't cheap, but they look just like TJATO's original set up. I may be interested in selling mine, though. I'm going to delete the radio as my car is going to be a track rat and then I will relocate the gauges to a blank piece where the radio is now. I'd rather have the gauges higher up for visibility.

Bavauto.com sells a really nice kit, it is pricy but comes with everything needed to install.

Is it feasible to use the center vent block off and put gauges there on a street car? I never use it anyways, always on defrost/footwell...

Just made one yesterday for mine. Since mine is still a daily and I enjoy tunes, I am going to move the OBC down and put them where it would be. Haven't thought of any ingenious way to mount them, so I was just going to glue it in. Should be done by Sunday, I'll post pictures if anyone would like them.

If you like to keep the radio, how about moving the HVAC down instead like these...
