But i want to ask it.

Regarding UUC's "oil center" oil cap ... If i were to get that... can i drill and tap an additional 2 holes to use as an oil in/out for an oil cooler? I mean the oil is pressurized right there right? I am not too familiar with the way BMW's oil system is set up, so i wanted to ask before i did something stupid.

I have seen other peoples pictures where someone made their own oil cooler by going through the oil filter cap.. i have tried to find the picture but i cant...

what do you guys say?

victory product design made one which had the ports for the cooler. However I don't think they are around anymore

I believe that bimmerworld was selling a kit including the Victory oil center cap. So I know it can be done.

How is it going to flow any oil if both ports in the cap? You are going to have equal pressure at both ports so all that you are going to do is probably fill the lines and cooler but it will not flow like a factory oil cooler would. I would definatly go a different route for an oil cooler than tapping into the lid.

so no other options then except to buy the over priced Euro E36 M3 oil filter housing??? What about using an E46 M3 housing? Do those work?

The E46 M3 oil filter housing is the exact same part as the Euro housing. It's the best OEM approach to adding an oil cooler.

Your idea of drilling the UUC oil center will not work.

UUc can set you up with the proper parts. Also they sell the Oil cooler in a kit....

VPD's oil cooler does go through the cap, but it's not just 2 holes drilled in it...

I've got a billet aluminum one for the e36 that I got when I bought a used accusump system for my e30 M3. It retails for $125....say $50 + shipping?

? No you wouldn't. The oil pump can only be on one side of the filter....so you would not have an equal pressure on both ports. The tricky part of the "oil cooler through the cap" should be that you need to pass oil through the canister first(up through the cap isolating the canister) and then through the cooler and feed it back to the outside of the canister(back through the cap, unisolated) so the oil can go through the outside of the filter and return to the engine via the inside port.

I'm no BMW expert but I'm going to be doing a block off plate so I can use a remote spin-on filter and an oil cooler...so someone that knows please fill me in!!

Thanks,
Don

I understand that oil flows through the filter from one side of the filter to the other, but if you use the UUC/VAC oil filter lid and just drill and tap the lid like they do for the oil temp/presure ports the pressure will be the same at both ports. Personally I would just save up and buy all the right parts and the euro/E46 M3 housing and do it right.

Yes, you couldn't tap a hole "like" the oil temp/pressure ports that's true. It is definetly not that easy!

And buying the "right" parts is always a good thing to do...:D

I knew i would find it... look at this picture... from Bimmerworld.. they sell the cap... $254... kinda steep but its better than spending $475.. i already have my heat exchanger and lines.. i'll go this route.
