View Full Version : How can you tell the difference???

How does one tell the difference between the 95 3.0 liter engine and the newer 96+ 3.2 liter engine? like say someone swapped in a 98 engine into a 95 m3 how can you tell before purchasing? Help would be much apprecaited.

one of the easiest ways to check is to look at the oil cap, in the 95`s, it is in the rear, and in the 96-99 it is in the front...

the vanos cover is also silver in the 95`s, and black on the 96+.


other than that it gets pretty hard to tell if not impossible without checking the vin on the block......

IIRC the oil filter housing is slightly different, i may be wrong though

Also if i'm not mistaken, didn't the intake manifold change as well...:dunno
