View Full Version : Just curious - DSC in the Z4M
Maxinator 01-10-2008, 12:27 AM This isn't a problem or issue...just curious....
The DSC in my '07 Z4MC seems very 'laid back' compared to my previous bimmers. In the Seattle rain, I am regularly doing minor fish-tails and breaking the rear-end free during normal daily (spirited) driving...and no DSC flashing or activity. In my previous bimmers, I would have seen and felt the DSC kick in immediately given the slightest wheelspin.. I finally took her out to a safe parking lot and gave her some gas and got the DSC to light up like crazy...but it took a surprising amount of wheel spin (and tail wagging) to do it.
Fellow Z4MR/C experience the same?
Like I said....not complaining. Just curious.
Kevlar 01-10-2008, 12:29 AM Every newer generation... it gets smarter and faster and it's ability to know when and when not to turn on becomes tuneable. Ever since the E36, it has been slowly getting better to the point that if it is coming on, I know I'm doing something wrong... otherwise, it just stands by in the shadows waiting to save my rear end. *excuse the pun*

Have you taken your Z4 M Coupe to a Car Control Clinic or Basic Skills School at Bremerton Motorsports Park?
http://www.bremertonmotorsportspark.com/schedule.htm
Best and safest environment to learn your limitations and your car's capabilities. All the local marque clubs (BMW, Porsche, Alfa, Audi) conduct driving schools at Bremerton.
I'll be there this Saturday with the Porsche Club :)

For some dumb reason I've never joined the BMW CC. I plan on hitting SIR sometime this year for a track day. I'm pretty quick in carts/shifters....but it seems the bigger the car gets, the slower I get! :confused Anyway....I plan on getting my a** in gear and hitting one or two of the track days at SIR later this year. But I have no illusions of being Schuey...so don't plan to really go *nuts* at the track. I've done enough damage to Formula Fords/Mazdas during previous driving classes in the past!! :)
But for the most part....if I even approach the limit of my car during everyday driving....I'm doing something pretty dumb and/or dangerous.....:nono
The HACK 01-10-2008, 07:14 PM The biggest difference between cars and karts, is cars have suspension. Weight transfer and weight management is 10X more crucial in a car than it is in a kart. On the other hand, if you're good at karts, you'll pick up cars fast. If you're good at cars, it'll take a while to get used to karts...But the fundamentals of driving both fast is about the same.
That, and left foot braking takes some getting used to in a car.

No kidding!!! I hear you!!
That and I can't heel-toe to save my life. Broke my leg when I was 3 and the poe-dunk (is that a word?) doc mis-set it. Spent two years in a brace trying to get my leg less crooked, but it's almost impossible for me to manuver my foot to properly heel-toe. :mad
(One reason I loved my SMG tranny in the 330...)
Oh well. That's why I'm an I.T. Manager, and not an F1 driver. That and a little thing called 'talent'. :D

Hey Jim,
I will be attending this Saturday, I have got to get the new M coupe figured out a little before auto cross starts up next month. Hopefully you can volunteer to be my instructor, it would be great to get some feedback from you.

CHRIS: I saw your name on the roster. I'll be on the Group 3 instructor team so if you're in Group 3 we can spend some seat time together.
After we complete the skills stations (Slalom, Skid Pad, Braking/Accident Avoidance, Figure 8, and Autocross) at 3:00 PM we'll have an open session with two autocross courses available.
Looks like it's going to be a wet day on Saturday; good driving conditions to practise throttle control with your new 330 HP Bimmer. Sport mode will not be your friend.
See you Saturday.

Unless you've recently completed a professional driving school like Skip Barber or ProFormance Racing School the local marque clubs (BMW, Porsche, Alfa, and Audi) require completion of a basic skills/car control school at Bremerton prior to moving on to HPDS events at Pacific Raceway (FKA SIR). All the clubs also require membership as a prerequisite to driving school participation and honor all memberships. So join BMW CCA and participate with all the marque clubs. BTW BMW CCA membership would have gotten you a $500 membership reward from BMW NA on your recent Z4 M Coupe purchase. Also many local businesses offer discounts on goods and services to BMW CCA members http://bmwpugetsound.com/discounts.htm

Cool...thanks. I've done the 'schools' thing...(Russel Racing)...but well over a decade ago....so I'm sure I'll need to get 'certified' again. Yeah...I know about the discounts...all the way back from my FIRST BMW purchase back in '98. One more reason I've kicked myself about not being a member! Cheers and enjoy your track time tomorrow!!! :)
