View Full Version : I think I have OCD
5mall5nail5 01-09-2008, 11:39 PM I am building an engine as some of you might know. Well, I got some more parts in and since I was held up by some stuff I figured I'd throw my parts in the polisher I bought.
So I grabbed all the bolts and nuts/screws from when I took the front clip off, along with valve cover nuts and such:

Came out pretty awesome. I was going to buy new valve cover washers/cap nuts, but it would be like $50+ and they come grey, so now these biatches are SHINY.
Binjammin 01-09-2008, 11:44 PM You *THINK* you have OCD?
Sounds more like ADD... you sure like shiny stuff :)
Binjammin 01-09-2008, 11:45 PM What type of polisher did you get, cloth wheel or rock tumbler?
5mall5nail5 01-09-2008, 11:48 PM Its a vibratory polisher - not really recommended for rocks, only metal parts.
moonsspoon 01-09-2008, 11:56 PM Those are smooth man. I was restoring the chrome hardware on a drum set not too long ago and polished all the nasty corroded bolts and washers. They come surprisingly clean. I just used a toothbrush and some chrome polish though...

Sorry, that's what I meant, used to have access to one at an electric starter and alternator rebuilding shop I worked at a few years back, had a MONSTER automated blasting cabinet big enough to do small wheels, a separate cab big enough to do large heads, and a polisher for when everything came out. Called it a rock polisher, because it used smooth stones... sorry for the confusion, been a LOOOOOOONG day for me.
5mall5nail5 01-10-2008, 12:13 AM Yeah I use a variety of media:

Can I be you? Just for a little bit, we can trade! It would be nice to work in a clean shop again, I miss that more than words can say. It's a really busy place where I'm at, and these guys are like family to me, but for the love of god they can't clean the place up worth a crap.
Sorry, vent over... what the hell are the pyramids? Glass?
5mall5nail5 01-10-2008, 12:24 AM Well the polishing is done in my home - so the cleanliness is all thanks to me.
The green pyramids are just that "green pyramids" I suspect they are some sort of composite plastic or something.
Binjammin 01-10-2008, 12:30 AM Dude, are you trying to open a shop or something? What are you going to do with all this after the car is done?
Turbo Charg Dynam 01-10-2008, 12:40 AM OCD nope, STD yes. :D
Binjammin 01-10-2008, 12:57 AM Ewwwwww.

Doesn't matter to me either way.
BTW, hoping to put the 540i on the dyno Friday. I wanted to get a baseline but lost patience and did the exhaust already. Also need to install a boost gauge to verify it's making 6psi. Looks like I can run 10psi on the bd-11 without destroying it.

attack eagle 01-10-2008, 03:18 AM yes you have OCD

93FIM5 01-10-2008, 03:28 AM I like shiny things too, hmm how much was this polisher?
thespeedfactory 01-10-2008, 03:50 AM I also want the link to the polisher. AWESOME attention to detail. Link? Price?

*shiver* I wish you luck Mr Todd I know that the display of letters forming "BD-11" strikes fear in my heart - just don't like that damned thing.
I am probably yanking the motor out this weekend - pretty excited.

I picked it up from harbor freight when I was in their store - $60 or so, the media is what gets you. I have 5 types of media which goes from heavy cutting down to fine polishing, each one is about $30 per 5 lb.
FLi GLi 01-10-2008, 09:27 AM This can be accomplished without a polisher, to some degree.
Pneumatic drill + wire wheel bit = a pretty good tool for cleaning up rusty bolts, washers, covers, brackets, etc.
Every bolt, washer, nut, bracket, etc. I take off any of my cars gets hit with the air drill and wire wheel combo. They don't look as good as the OPs, but a pretty close second. Makes them 100x easier to work with, too.
Just another alternative if you can't afford/dont have the space for a polisher.
Cheers
ceedee 01-10-2008, 09:33 AM i am not quite that bad just almost ocd, thats why my handle is ceedee.
