When driving along the car pulls like it should in 1st 2nd 3rd but in 4th 5th it doesn't feel as responsive as it should be. There is a like rattling noise or a little shudder comming from the engine bay and is alot worst up a hill.
Having had the car looked at a while back the machannic said the catylic convertor was breaking up, could this cause this?
I was thinking No, more of a worn spark-plug spomething like this.
info most appreciated. Thanks

When you say pinging is that like missing.
So really it most proberly is the cats causing this eagle.

Nope.
plugs, injectors, coils, carbon build up, o2 sensor, fpr, exhaust obstruction, fuel pump, filter, gas grade, gas brand, etc etc.

What octane gas are you using? Try the highest octane or switch to another gas company and try their highest octane gas. Pinging could be caused by the gas.

Not to sound like a dick, but ... it's a 150hp engine in a humongous car ... you can't really expect too much responsiveness and power in 4th and 5th.

+1. we had a 320 in germany. it would go 180 kph all day long, but getting there took a bit of time. and i guarantee the 320 weighed a half ton less.
a plugged cat would be felt in all gears.
try high octane gas first, then do the usual maintenance... plugs, air filter, fuel filter, etc.

yeah cheers guys i wll try the higher octane. I do also understand its a heavy old 11 yearold car all the same. When say driving along a flat piece of rd and you stick it ina high gear at low rpm it does this also. As if it werent getting enough fuel and a very slight shudder. I do understand that a high gear at low rpm the car likely to stall buyt just doesnt fell right.
Also just had the inspection 11 so all filters plugs new.
If this is due to the cats is it poss to go second hand.
forgive me as my knowlegde of engines isnt tip top.

good to hear that the basics are in place.
as for cats, don't go used. find some aftermarket cats that are cheaper than OEM. try the o2 sensor first, it's way cheaper and probably needs to be done if the cat is also bad.
