Found out the the knocking in my engine will cost about $2000 to fix. Thinking of just putting a new engine in the car. Wondering what would be good to fit into my 1993 318is (m42) e36 2 door auto.
What's possible to put in it? M3, newer 95 318is etc??? Maybe switch to manual also???
Thanks.

Dude just read all the threads in this section and you will have a good idea of whats possible. The sky is limit and well the deepness of your pocket also. Good luck!

In only depends on your budget and level of experience...

Just swapping in a used, replacement M42 is a good bit of work. Converting to a M50 is a lot more work. An S50/52 is as well. A non-BMW engine ups the ante again.

Budget and experience, then goals and time.

I here that. I'm just thinking that $2000 on a lifter is craze. Might as well start looking for a good swap? Something practical yet awesome-O.
If nothing works out...might just have to look for another early e36. Things should fall into place. Thanks for all the input for sure.
