View Full Version : General Exclaim UHP vs. Kumho Ecsta SPT
Jo@EuroDyne 01-08-2008, 04:27 AM I'm planning to run the Miro Type 368 19's (19x8.5 et15 and 19x10 et 20) staggered in a mirror black finish...Anyway, the tire setup is where I need your help please...which one would you do for this setting:
Fronts: 235/35/19
Rears: 265/30/19
I made a poll, one quick simple vote and maybe you reasoning why I should go for it? By the way, this is what Tirerack has them in standings...I chose these two since they definitely have more bang for the buck...and are pretty reliable...no recommendations for michelin, just going to spend too much on tires.
DaJackel 01-08-2008, 10:10 AM I've heard good things about both, but it seems the General are a bit better. ;)
Don Nguyen 01-08-2008, 12:55 PM I dunno why, but I think the SPTs are better.
We sell both the wheels and tires as a package together. We get our tires from tirerack.com
Let me know if you are interested, and we can do a local pick up option for you as well.
thanks.

Whiplash 01-08-2008, 02:23 PM I've had great luck with the UHP's. I currently have them on the M3 sedan and the ti. They are fairly quiet, they are pretty sticky (in the dry AND in the rain) and so far, they've held up better than any set of Khumos I've had.
Chances are you would be happy with either choice but I will definitely get the UHP's again next time (really hard to beat for the money).
Jo@EuroDyne 01-08-2008, 03:51 PM I actually had Kumhos on my previous touring...had about 7k on before the accident happened...Anyway, I had no complains about the SPTs, I also loved the thread aesthetically...but one can't ignore the better pricing of the Generals...Plus, the vote is looking pretty close...

Thanks for the offer sir! But I already am getting a good deal from the Hub Ring King and he's just right down the street as well =)...
Mooobunnny 01-08-2008, 03:57 PM I say Kumho SPT's hand down. They are quiet, have great wet and dry grip for their price and treadwear and are a wonderful tire for the money. I was very underwhelmed with my UHP's, but I do not have a direct comparison since they were on a different car.
JohnnyWash1 01-08-2008, 05:04 PM My buddy has the SPTs on his E36 and I had the UHPs. He did not like the grip of the SPTs, while I was impressed with everything the UHP had to offer. It was quiet, grippy in all conditions, and wore decently.
Jo@EuroDyne 01-09-2008, 05:34 AM and the kumhos have a slight lead on the poll...but i wonder why there are obvious praises for the generals...man this is a tough choice...lol.
fishforlife 01-09-2008, 05:38 AM the general tires are junk...i suppose they had decent tread life..i did plenty of burnouts and their straight line grip was decent too...but they had very very very weak sidewalls i often thought i felt them rolling over...i never confirmed this. anywho i was very disappointed with them. i know you havent listed them but have you considered hankook rs2 or flaken 615 both are in the price range of the ones your looking at and are better tires. something to think about

the two you gave as options...sound interesting...unfortunately i don't see any reviews for the two on tire rack...plus tire rack doesnt carry falkens...tire rack carries hankooks but the rs2 isn't an option...
oh nevermind...just looked up falken's rt-615 at their main website...it only goes up to 18s...too bad i love the look of the tread!!!
you know where i can find the hankooks?

arktissilber 01-09-2008, 05:14 PM General Exclaim UHP
best bang for you buck
95325i 01-09-2008, 08:34 PM I have the Exclaim UHP on my car they are great. I have had no issue with them at all. I have used them in light snow and they where good for summer tires. I had the Kumhos on my 325 when i first got it i did not like them at all. It could have been that the tires did need to be replaced but they sucked.

I guess you're the type I need to hear from, one with experience on both kumhos and generals....
jr1966 01-10-2008, 07:57 PM I have the SPTs in my E32 and UHPs in my Z3. I can't really make a direct comparison as they are installed in different cars, but for the price, you can't lose going either way. Both have very good ride characteristics. I do feel the SPTs are a bit edgier and have better dry grip and stiffer sidewall. The UHPs does have a better price and lighter in weight.
Volcom8190 01-10-2008, 09:52 PM i have the SPTs on my car, 245/40/17s...for the money I feel like i couldnt have gotten a better tire. my mom had generals on her last car and i could push them over their limits on local backroads.
BigLoggerhead 01-11-2008, 01:47 AM I'm actually having the same dilemma myself. From everything I've read it depends on what you're going to do with the tire. If you're an aggressive driver who likes to push your car around the back roads or go to the track on occasion then from what I've been able to find the Kumho may suit you best. On the other hand, if you're just a normal driver who goes back and forth to work or down to the grocery store then the General is probably better. From everything I've heard the General has softer sidewalls but is still good about treadwear and noise. Personally, I think the General will better suit my needs. That's more than likely what I will buy.
fishforlife 01-11-2008, 03:20 AM dude the generals should not even be considered i bought them for the same reason most others do....you read the reviews. let me tell you again from personal expierence they are terrible the side walls all like you driving around on a 60series tire...i even had like 40psi in them to no avail.
and yes edgeracing.com carries the 615s and rs2.
96m3SC 01-11-2008, 06:49 PM for the money. General tread wear is better too
fishforlife 01-11-2008, 07:12 PM if thread wear is the only thing being considered than yeah generals take the cake....but they are a terrible tire:mad im trying to prevent others from making the same mistake it did.

See I had the exact opposite experience. I encourage everybody to get the General's.

if you think they have a good turn in response/their side walls are stiff than im calling you an idiot and everything else you say should be discredited based upon your opinion in this thread alone.
95M3theo 01-11-2008, 10:52 PM I voted for the Generals. I justed order myself four 245 40 17's for my car last week. Should be coming in anyday now.
BigLoggerhead 01-12-2008, 12:36 AM if you think they have a good turn in response/their side walls are stiff than im calling you an idiot and everything else you say should be discredited based upon your opinion in this thread alone.
I think you're response is a bit harsh in my opinion. This thread boils down to personal OPINION. Just because someone else's assessment doesn't agree with yours doesn't mean that their an idiot. If anything, you seem to be the moron. People will like a tire based on different reasons. Perhaps one person likes the lack of road noise or the tread life. Another person such as yourself may dislike the tire because of handling capabilities. Just because one person's opinion differs from yours doesn't mean that one person is right and the other is wrong. It just a difference in opinion. That just what about 90% of these threads are about, PERSONAL OPINION.
That being said, I believe my first post would probably sum up a large portion of most people's opinions. I know this because I've been researching this same subject myself. In the end it boils down to what type of driving you're probably going to be doing. Just look at the personal experiences on TireRack. They both have positive and negative feedback just as you have received in this thread. But in the end it will come down to the type of driver you are. See my above post. I've already read alot of the feedback on both tires.
fishforlife 01-12-2008, 01:31 AM okay so i read the first post again and the op limited his choices to 2 tires based on "bang for buck." i also didnt pay much attention to what vehicle these would be going on. so you are right i am the moron. for his situation of those 2 tires he would like an opinion on the generals meet the criteria of "bang for buck" better. im typically helping people make decisions for performance reasons and as would guess this mentality is worthless in this thread as the priorities are different. i over reacted and again look like a douche bag not you...teh reading comprehension pwnd me. to the op if you change your priorities then my previous posts stand:) otherwise based solely on "bang for buck" in regard to tread life the generals win.
BigLoggerhead 01-12-2008, 02:47 AM Now see! Wasn't that better! No harm no foul man.:)
fishforlife 01-12-2008, 03:45 AM no more bumping this thread it make me look bad:nono:D
JohnnyWash1 01-12-2008, 02:26 PM if you think they have a good turn in response/their side walls are stiff than im calling you an idiot and everything else you say should be discredited based upon your opinion in this thread alone.
Jo@EuroDyne 01-14-2008, 03:07 PM i was out for a weekend and i get all these great responses. thanks guys!!!
m3cliff 01-22-2008, 06:05 PM Not to rehash a dead post, but...
If you drive the UHP and SPT like a "normal" driver the Generals will last longer.
I wear through any tires in no more than 12,000 miles in the rear of a stock 97 M3, and I have had both.
The Kumho's grip better, turn-in better and feel better to me. Of course I like the car taunt. The Generals are slightly quieter, and ride noticeably softer.
I'm not putting anyone down who has a different opinion, but I'd like to know their car, s/u and experience if they think the General is a better "performance " tire. If you drive similar to me, you will not get better mileage out of the Generals and they definitely will not grip better.
I live in so. Calif. so I really don't care about wet performance, as it only rains 12 days a year and not hard when it does.
Also the Hankook RS2s and Falken 615 are a lot better performing than either of these two tires. Yes they ride a little harder and will not wear as long, if driven normally, but if you run around corners and push it some, they will last as long and grip much better than the UHP's and a little better than the SPT's.
If you are just basing your decision on price, then do just that. Otherwise pick the "opinions" you seem to agree with or that seem most believeable.
Good luck!
Jo@EuroDyne 01-26-2008, 04:17 AM everytime i reference back to this thread, i get more confused....i guess i should be more descriptive of my needs....
firstly the bang for the buck is definitely something i do take consideration...having a soft ride is a plus and i love to not have road noise...at the same time, on freeway ramps i tend to do 20++ miles over the suggested speed limit and at least everytime i go to and fro work, i'd push the car to do 120++ mph...
so which one should i go for?
by the way, i need 235/35/19s and 275/30/19s... i wanted the toyos proxies and the nittos nt1, but they don't run those sizes...also i stay clear from falkens since i never had a good experience with them...
JohnnyWash1 01-26-2008, 06:45 PM Wait, you go 120mph on your commute to work? Slow the F down.
