View Full Version : Super long threads kill servers...

Guys, consider breaking up your threads and not excessively posting in one thread if not necessary. Long threads take their toll on server operations and need to be broken up or used less frequently.

Plus... nobody from the past is going to read through 1000+ replies on a single subject, especially if the majority of them are off-topic.

Please consider making the Colorado Springs Roll Call a sticky. We use it as a medium to communicate and without it we're kind of lost.

You're not supposed to read through that thread as it serves as an ongoing communication center for the Colorado Springs and some Denver Bimmerforums BMW enthusiasts.

Cool, We'll make a new OMGWTFBBQ thread and myself or Steve will PM you so you can sticky it for us. Then you can drop the current one. We're thinking about calling it something different anyway.

Thanks Kevlar

Letting us know that you're locking the thread is a good thing. That way an alternate means of communication can be arranged prior to being tossed out on our rear ends from our own thread... and while nobody from the past may be reading 1000+ posts in the same thread, I do recall there being a search function to aid in finding the relevant material for whatever it is that they're looking for ;)

I have made attempts to have springs roll call stickied. I would say its far from off topic and deals with the topics that are relevant in our region at the current time. I would not have been able to keep my car running were it not for the local and regional help of roll call. Regional threads and regional discussions are kind of the point of having regional forums. High resolution pictures are also a server killer but thousands are posted in rides and styling. Please sticky Colorado springs roll call or my neighbors cat gets whacked.

I just posted a replacement for the KC BBQ thread with a suggested format so it's a single post with the required info. We can bring up new threads to discuss so we don't kill the machines.

how about have the sticky post have a link to the more recent thread re: that event so pplz can post in that thread..

then just update it to the new thread as time goes on.

I take it the load on the server has something to do with keeping such a long thread active and not letting it roll out to be archived?

The neighbors cat is dead.

So is the roll call. RIP. It just seems horrendous that a thread filled with members who are consistently supplying the supporting vendors on this forum with cash and supplying each other the knowledge to fix our own cars, thus freeing up more cash to spend with the supporting vendors would have such a horrible fate. I guess I have to hang out now in the Kill Stories section and find ways to get in to trouble instead of hanging out with my friends and staying out of trouble.

I am truly disappointed.

I have an idea. Lets just create a separate thread for each new discussion that we'd normally post in the Colorado Springs Roll Call. I wonder how the servers would like that?

[EDIT]: Oh, I guess someone else thought of it first.

That is the right way to do it... many smaller threads are easier to manage than one large thread.
