Just bought my second 740iL (2001) about 60 miles from home. I test drove it a week ago and went over this car well and all seemed to be in order with the exception of minor details. Now about a block from my home I hear strange noises from the power steering pump area. When I squeeze the hose which comes from the bottom of the reservoir (feeds the pump?), I can feel distinct pulses. Sometimes after sitting, I'll start the car and the pump won't make a sound. Furthermore, I have determined that under initial acceleration, it quiets right down, and under braking, the sound comes back, indicating it might be fluid level related, but the level is correct. More like a howl, not at all like a low fluid sound on an American car. My last 740iL shucked a pump, tangled up the belt and broke the fan blade. I sure don't want to go through that again! Any ideas?

Bill,
I would recommend a fluid flush first. I'm assuming you're using ATF as your power steering fluid. Buy around 4 or so quarts of the correct ATF (correct meaning the Dextron III or IV), loosen the clamp (not sure if they are 1 time-use clamps) on the bottom of the power steering pump, but just ensure you are removing the 'return' line clamp. An empty washer fluid container of some sort is needed to catch the old fluid coming out.
I would also recommend a helper assist you as you need someone in the car to start it and turn the steering wheel from left to right (not locktolock) as you "flush" the old fluid out.Once you see the fluid running clear / newer, turn engine off & plug the hose you disconnected back to the pump.
Let the car run for approx 5 - 10 minutes to allow the air bubbles out. Otherwise, also check your belt(s) to ensure they are in good condition and with the proper tension on the pulleys.
Now, for my disclaimer.... I own an e32, and I am assuming you have a e38. The above procedure may be incorrect as far as the fluid flushing, so my apologies in advance to the Guru's on this forum if I am wrong.
Essentially my statement above is suggesting your fluid is worn out, or for a lack of better words, lost it's ooooomph to provide the appropriate protection for the power steering.
Oh, BTW, if you have self leveling suspension, ensure you do not need Pentosin fluid instead of the above ATF as mentioned above. The power steering cap or cover should state the appropriate fluid, or of course, your owners manual.
Lastly, Hopefully one of the Guru's here Plik, ShoGun, QSliver, Bimmerfixr, or others can correct me or "steer" you in the appropriate direction (hehehe).
Good Luck !!
