God damn, when and if i ever get married, my wife will have to be cool with going to car meets. Bring the kid! When i was a kid i loved going to watch my dad race and go with him to car meets and such.

Since we are meeting at a bowling alley, bowling has been made an option. Since its around lunch time, I'm sure some will split off for that as well. There are a few places to dine around that area, and I believe the bowling alley is next door to Rock Bottom Brewery.

Someone told me that they don't sell it up here because at this altitude 91 Octane ~ 93 Octane. I don't know how true that is, but I was just searching around the other day. There is quite a few places that sell 100+

Yeah, at our altitude 91 octane = 93 octane a mile lower. That's why our gas stations sell 91/89/87 and the lowlands get 93/91/89.

You can get higher octane gas around here though (expect to pay $$$). Check out this website for details:

Thanks Tom. Have you had any experience with software tuned for 93 at sea level being run on 91 octane at altitude? I want to make sure I can safely run 91 without the timing retarding, otherwise the gains I'd get would be negated and I'd be better off with tuning for 91... anything helps.

Cool subject, David...

First some nerd science!: The octane rating of fuel tells you it's anti-detonation or auto-ignition (antiknock) resistance characteristics. Higher octane fuel burns slower and is less volatile (less likely to auto-ignite) than lower octane fuel. Regular gasoline is commonly cited to auto-ignite at 495 deg F, which intuitively seems rather high given that paper auto-ignites at 451 deg F - thus the famous book title... Anywayz, if the air pressure decreases or the oxygen concentration decreases (we have both occurring due to our altitude, though the oxygen concentration is the more important factor once we compress the air in our combustion chambers), the temperature the gasoline will auto-ignite at goes higher. Because of this direct relationship with pressure and oxygen content, the octane rating can also be viewed as indicating the pressure the fuel will auto-ignite at. Viewed this way, higher octane fuel can withstand a higher pressure (compression ratio) before it will auto-ignite. Higher combustion pressure provides higher performance (more power), thus why higher octane fuels are needed in these applications. :confused

It's my understanding is that 91 octane at our altitude (lower oxygen content) is factored to give a similar auto-ignition temperature (and knock-resistance) as 93 octane at sea level (higher oxygen concentration). Viewed from the pressure standpoint, at our altitude, 91 octane can stand the same combustion pressure without detonating as 93 octane can at sea level (again, due to the lower oxygen content in given volume of air). Stated yet another way, the combustion speed/flame front would travel at the same rates with 91 octane and our air as with 93 octane and sea level air.

---

Our engine ignitions are timed to have a max advance (at operating revs) just shy of where the engine will knock, or auto-ignite the fuel, without/before a sparkplug fires. On my 02, for example, with it's simple mechanical advance ignition, running 93 octane at sea-level (N'awlins) my max advance was set to 34deg. Here in Denver, running 91 octane, it still turns out my max advance is 34deg. I'd knock in N'awlins with 91.

Modern engine management systems/software, which use MAF sensors, knock sensors and such to ensure optimal air-fuel ratios and ignition timing should be able to auto-adjust to the altitude and octane of our fuel here. If, in setting an aftermarket system up, it has specs for 93 octane fuel at sea-level, I believe you can correlate that to 91 octane here. (93 here would be like 95 octane at sea level). If you plan to always run 93, 100, or even 110 octane in your engine here, I guess you could set the engine management software adjustments/spec for that, likely increasing your ignition advance timing, and try to extract more power - but you'd detonate/knock/ping (and less than optimal performance) if you ever tried to or had to run 'normal' 91 high-test gas with that set-up.

HTH. Pardon the long-winded reply. (I'm an engineer :help :drink3).

Black Saphire Metallic if done in HDR on a cloudy day will give it the perfect cover to blend the engine and hood.

My pics from the GTG were horrible - commically bad. I thought I could compensate for the bleached mid-day light and poor background through HDR and clone stamping, but I was wrong. Example:

Once you get your Coupe broken in and the weather gets a little nicer we'll have to go rally up in the Moutains.

Cheers

I wasn't feeling too social either. Too much fun the night before. However, it was nice seeing all the cars!
