I'm seriously considering the purchase of a 2004 545i with the SMG transmission. Unfortunately, the test drive was flawed by what seemed to be inordinate hesitation when initially accelerating from a stop. Felt like being stuck in molasses! I've asked that the car be examined by the local BMW dealer prior to finalizing the purchase.

I've also done some research on the net (and found this forum). There were a series of posts from 2004-2005 describing this "problem". What I haven't found was any conclusive information that BMW has resolved it. Can anyone out there shed any light?

Otherwise, the car is nearly flawless, and low miles (28K). From CARFAX, it looks like it was owned in the Sarasota Florida area (and unfortunately was in some sort of accident in Bradenton). Does this ring any bells with members here (the car seems otherwise clean!).

Any other issues to watch out for?

Thanks!

Is this car being sold by a private party? Try going to the BMW dealer and see if they have any SMG cars that you could test drive to compare.
I have a manual transmission so I can not comment on the SMG transmission. My car has 42,000 miles and has been a great car, with no problems.
Good luck.

I wouldn't own an SMG unless it was an M car. Just my opinion.

There are some SMG software updates on these vehicle, Consider having them update the complete vehicle software prior to the purchase of the vehicle. Then drive the vehicle after the repair and see if there is any improvment.

I have a 2006 550i with a SMG. It has been flawless and my only complaint is that it has essentially two settings (sport/non-sport) as oposed to the 18 settings available on M cars. I likely will buy a six speed manual next car I get.

I have 2004 530i SMG and I will say that what has helped is software updates. Also, if the car is driven like a wussy, the adaptive software will keep it in wussy for awhile. I recently got a part changed for a "slow throttle response" complaint. Not sure if it's mechanical or software yet.

Sport mode is more "right now". Non sport you have to mentally stay ahead of the car more regarding throttle control.
