View Full Version : What other cars consume your lives?

I can't be the only one on here with more than 1 car, right? I know a lot of car guys have multiple cars, but many of them are simply beaters, or drivers they dont really care about. I guess I'm pretty lucky that all my fleet are cars I truly love.

I'll start with my daily driver;

1990 735iL. It's had EVERYTHING replaced, and runs and drives like a new car. Also has 17x8" style 14's, 245/45/17 Kumho' Bilstein Sport/Bav Auto suspension, and I just ordered new SS brake hoses for it. Still has some small cosmetic issues to deal with, but I would drive it around the world, and not worry about. Odometer just rolled 407000km today, and shows no signs of slowing down. Being a mechanic and BMW repair shop owner kinda helps, mind you. I also plan to install a Mark D chip this year. Other than that, just upkeep on it.

Next up is the first of 2 toy cars. 1977 630csi. This is a rust free Southern California car that I picked up about 3 years ago. It was basically a rolling shell, no engine, trans, interior, etc. Most of the parts were there, just not on the car! It was a 3 speed auto in a former life, but I waited and waited for an E12 based 6 series parts car to come, with a 5 speed. An 81 633csi donated it's 265 gearbox, 3.2L M30, and a pile of other bits. Now running and driving, just needs some dialing in. Stored for winter at the moment. Seats were covered in nasty black vinyl when I bought it, so we had to fix that as well. New leather would have been nice, but just not in my budget right now. We used a colour matched tweed cloth, which looks very classy, and appropriate in an early 6er. No huge plans to restore this car, just use it, enjoy it, and slowly bring back to as new.

And then of course the 323i. Not much to tell about, it's basically stock, except wheels, H&R springs, and Koni adjustables. It's also be changed from Safari Beige, to Zinnoberrot, a newer BMW colour. Hoping to finally have it running and driving this year.

That 323 is starting to look NICE!

I have a 1995 JEEP GC that I like to take care of. It was my first new car and still looks and runs great. We also have a 2007 Jeep GC and a 2006 E90 330i, but those get taken to the dealer under warranty.

Aside from the '72 tii that I want to bring back from the dead (sentimentel reasons), and an 87 e30 that never moves......Motorsickles. A '77 Suzuki GS with a big bore kit from the 750/835, electronic ignition, and Alphabet headers. I redid the suspension with progressives all around, and I put all 35hp to the ground through a Barnett clutch and some skinny IRC tires.
I picked up a 2007 Suzuki sv650, and it has changed my life. Never mind that I don't like to drive the 323 fast on public roads, because the sv hits 60 in about 3.5 seconds, and runs the 1320 in about 11 seconds at 115 mph. Bone stock. And that is SLOW for a 600cc bike. Now, thats a grocery getter! Infact, I think I'm out of milk, or something. I. Must. Go. Now.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I just picked up a new project vehicle recovery rig yesterday:
2008 Jeep Commander, Hemi, Overland package, traded in the 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited Hemi:

I've been a long time Jeep fan as well as a Bimmer fan, this is my 5th Jeep. I could care less what it looks like, it drives like a dream for a daily driver! My budget doesn't allow for an X5 for a daily driver/work rig, so this is as close as I can get.

I'll dig up pics, maybe later today...

The car that has consumed me since before most of you knew me (esp the people that have joined the Legion in the last year) is my '90 M3. Alpine White II on tan. Not my first color combo choice, but you can't always be picky when it comes to getting a good e30 M3. Mine was CPO when I bought it, so THAT was the big selling point, not the tan leather. I bought it in '99 and put about 55k miles on it at autoX's, canyon runs, highway driving to Bimmerfest, you name it. And then the bubble burst at Willow Springs in '03 when I blew the motor. 3 years later I FINALLY got the S14 rebuilt and it is running again now. But NOW I have to divide my time and money between the M3's suspension bushings and the e21's suspension overhaul.

After getting the M3 I decided I needed a daily driver (no way my driving record could last DD'ing the M3 :stickoutt). First got a '90 Z28, that was a POS. Traded that in on a '98 Jetta GLX VR6. She is named Wendy Testaburger. And just like the girl on Southpark, you don't F*CK with Wendy Testaburger! I used to go to the street races down here in San Diego (no need for lectures, that is in my past now) and would walk on most things from the e36 325is to a non-turbo 300ZX and all sorts of Honda's, etc, etc. Everyone thinks it is a 2.Slow....boy are THEY in for a surprise! But Wendy's days with me are numbered. She's been a great car, but I really don't have the space for 4 cars. I'm trying to cut it down to 3 tops. I will miss her intake roar for many years to come. Anyone that has heard a throaty VR6 knows what I'm talking about.

And then there is my CURRENT Daily Driver. I picked up a '91 e30 318is about 4 years ago for $800. The prior owner thought it had a blown motor. Turns out her mechanic was trying to take her for a ride...it was a dead battery. The car was MINT when I got it otherwise. I have since beaten into the ground. But it has probably been the BEST car to use on a daily basis I've ever had. 4 cylinder gas mileage. Near 6 cylinder power (due to chip and the twin cam design). Everything was designed to be low maintenance on the motor (self adjusting valves, long life plugs, oil filter a cartridge type up top, etc, etc). It has just been a breeze to own. I'm thinking of getting rid of it too and getting a 135i to DD. We'll see if I can actually swing that financially though...

Here's a pic of the Jetta's butt with both the e21's. Safari one was sold about 4 years ago.
http://e21.tricord.be/members/uberpanzer/Jetta.jpg

Here's a few of the M3 and the 318is, pics are about 4 years old as well. 318's paint is in worse shape.

My obsesion stated with a 95 318i. I needed a new suspention and it cost way to much to have a shop do it, so I bought a Bently manual, borroed a garage and some tools and did it myself. THen I found auto-x, my 318i was slow and I'm a sucky driver, but I raced it anyway...I got a chip, the motor blew, I put in a performance M42, and auto-xed it some more. I found a rusty bondo covered 78 320i I payed $25.00 for, then I found the rusty 79 320i and a few months later I got the Baur. Then last July 3rd I picked up a 98 M3 sedan. So far my wife has tolerated my habit, although the $25.00 beater went to the crusher...I just wish I had money to mess with the M3 and the Baur....oh well someday soon I'll be working on the astetic parts of the baur since the mechanical stuff is almost all in good order.

I have the "new" car the 1998 E36 M3 Sedan I daily drive now,

And I have my "fun" (not that an M3 isn't a fun car too) 1981 323i Baur sporting the 2.7L Eta Motor with an after market "i" cam of some sort, billie sports, gc coil overs, gc camber plates, frame rail brace, freds control arms, adjustable rear sway, 15x7 bourbet e-30 rims with spacres and gobs more stuff...

My other car is a '99 Honda Accord I4 5-speed manual. Nothing too special, but it was my first car and has been great to me. Just about to hit 97k miles, so I'll be keeping at least til I graduate from Georgia Tech.

It does have H&R lowering springs, and I've almost completed my stereo system. The last couple components are on the way. Infinity Kappa component fronts, Kappa 3-way 6x9 rears, Alpine Type-R 10" sub, and two Alpine amps powering it all (one 4-channel and one mono). I was planning on getting Koni Yellow shocks, steel brake lines, and a short shifter, but then I bought my E21.

I've been a old car lover all my life. Until 2002, the newest car I ever owned was an 85; before the 85, it was a 73! I have since learned to have one new car, and several older ones :D. I only got my 320 last year, but love driving it! I also have an 83 Silverado 20, and a very rare 1977 Pontiac Can Am. Only 1377 were made and only in 77. It's like a big Trans Am :buttrock. So between the 3 old cars I'm always playing with, I now have a 4 month old son. I can't wait to show him how to work on the great cars of the past. Here is some pics. Cool rides, guys! A Pontiac Can Am?? Holy crap, I've only ever seen one, and it belonged to a friend of mine who was crazy for Pontiacs. Funny you mention that you always drive old cars, same here. Until 2006, the newest car I owned was an 87 VW Scirocco 16V. Then I went out and bought an 06 Volvo V50 AWD. Funny though, after a year and half, I sold it, and replaced it with my 735iL.

But 320Bimmer, please don't tease me with an Interceptor, and then not show me pictures!!! Thats just cruel. Nothing cooler than a British car stuffed full of American V8. Then again, I came home from the hospital in a Sunbeam Tiger, so I may be biased a bit.

Other cars in my family include:

03 Volvo V70 (dads)
86 Porsche 928S (dads, owned since 87 or 88, only 62k km on it)
87 Nissan 300zx (moms, owned since new, just over 100k km)
92 VW Jetta (moms driver)
96 Dodge Ram turbo diesel 2500 (moms!!!)
07 Nissan Altima 3.5 (brothers. Boring as snot, but man is it FAST!)
99 VW Golf(sis in law)

Besides cars(I've owned about 50), I've also owned 2 bikes. A Honda Hurricane 600, and a Honda CBR 900RR. Couple of post crash, wrist reconstructions have kept me a little bike shy these days, though.

Well, the other car in my life is a Mustang. I bought it a few years back as a roller and have been collecting parts since. The project is a little slow going because of funds availability, but I'm also being very particular with what parts I'm putting on it. In the end, I'll have a completely new suspension, rear end, interior and tricked out motor. Then I'll start saving for a paint job. Sure is a lot easier to find parts for a 5.0 mustang than a E21 bimmer...for sure. :redspot:buttrock

320iJoe....what suspension you goin with inthe back of the 'Stang? I've toyed with the idea of getting an old Fox Body and putting the newer IRS from the SVT Cobra into it. To me that has been the main drawback to those cars (other than being a GM fan when it comes to Domestics...).

Thanks! The red B6 is unfortunately been stagnant for about three months in the shop. Im having a lot of problems just getting it running for any length of time, and I still have a lot of work to do to it. I had to go through the entire cooling system first, change the fuel pump, and now the ignition system is going out. Alpina put all these weird sensors on the car, and Ive had to fabricate new brackets to hold them in place, and thats taking forever for some reason. Now we are waiting on another part to come in from Germany so we can just keep the car running, so I can get it over to the bodyshop for a little paint work. The electrical system on the interior items needs a lot of work as well, so its far from being finished. Last I saw it, the car is brown from all the dust all over it, but I have slowly collected just about everything I need to put it back together once I get it running right. Its been way too long with this car, but it should come together nicely once its running right. Im going to try and take some pictures this week, if he gets up on the lift and starts working again.

It's all folklore and old wife tales! The MR2 is an amazing handling machine, but don’t try to drive it like your run of the mill front wheel drive and expect to keep it straight. Sadly, this reputation is due to inexperienced drivers, who drive the car beyond their abilities. It requires experience and patience to get the best out of the car, but when you do, it is great!!! I am a seasoned driver and have learned to take the car to its limits with great results. I actually enjoy driving the MR2 when it is raining (a rather frequent event in this side of the country) more than when it is dry. My car is not a turbo model and the rain is a great equalizer (we all have 500HP when it rains).

It took me more than a year to find the MR2 I wanted and I’m keeping it for a long time. It is an outstanding and over-engineered car that provides exotic car handling and prowess for the cost of a Civic.

This is just my very biased opinion!

Okay, so it's a Gibson and not a Pontiac, and a guitar and not a car, but you wouldn't believe how much time keeping guitars up to snuff takes. And it's been hotrodded with custom pickups. Since my other ride is a 2007 Mazda(ford) pickup, I chose to post this.

You are my Hero. I love those Can Ams and have wanted one since I missied a killer deal about 10 years ago to buy one for $2000. Not a whole lot of people knew about those cars. Real interesting that the machine that made the rear spoilers broke and that ended the production run early of those things.

Currently this is whats in my collection:

1977 320i
1983 320is
1984 318i
1980 Firebird Formula
2003 Dodge Ram 1500 Hemi
1975 Honda Z50
1976 Harley SS175
1981 Honda CB900c
2006 Suzuki Boulevard M50 - For Sale $5500
1990 Four Winns 205 Sundowner - my mini yacht

I have owned a TON of cars too. Here is a link to pictures of some of my rides:

320iJoe....what suspension you goin with inthe back of the 'Stang? I've toyed with the idea of getting an old Fox Body and putting the newer IRS from the SVT Cobra into it. To me that has been the main drawback to those cars (other than being a GM fan when it comes to Domestics...).

The IRS is a good addition for using the car as a "road or corner carver", but I'm more of a "go fast in a strait line" with this car. I'm just rebuilding the diff, replacing the control arms, etc. etc....The 5.0 aftermarket world has to be the biggest of them all and so much more affordable then any other......You could start with nothing and build a pretty freaking nice mustang with less then it takes to buy a new one. Of course my blood is Blue but I'm somewhat hooked on the BMWs now. If I could find an M3 in a decent price I'd being wearing one of those.:alright

I'm sure there's no doubt when they hear it lol. It turns heads with local dub guys I see driving around. Don't really go to any of the local meets, so they don't really know me or the car at all. I'm at a point where I'd rather kill debt, than have a sweet dub. Plus, I've been dding the e21 for a few months now, and I'd like to put some more money and time into it, and be comfortable, and debt free.

Thanks 320 Bimmer - It helps that my brother owns a body shop in Petaluma For the Acura he was repainting a 350z in Copper and told me to send up as many engine parts and he would paint them.

Did the same thing on the wifes Titan engine, but did not go too crazy (Electric Blue from an 05 Corvette). He also painted the center console on the truck the same OEM Red as the exterior. He just sold his business, but still has access to the shop. I will be paying a lot to have the BMW done in a few years to make up for all the free paint jobs.

don't have pics of either right now, but my daily driver and my baby right now is my 07 f150 that my uncle gave me when i had my lisence and the e21 wasn't wanting to run. its basically the plain white, regular cab, long bed, 4.6 v8, auto. its a kick ass truck, but at 13 to the gallon when i'm going between work and school and home, i can't hardly afford it.

my new toy is an 89 civic hatch. it's beige with a brown interior. i am doing the basic maitnance stuff to get it back to daily drive state, while i am rebuilding an si engine and 5 speed. after that i will lower it, do body work and put some nice wheels on it. here is a pic of exactly how i want it (i still want the polished lip) http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a296/woodysayys/IMG_0976.jpg

Everything else in the fleet is Gm powered. 1967 Chevelle SS396 - matching numbers, muncie 4 speed etc. Fun car in a straight line (dynoed at 426 hp) but with bias plies and drum brakes - pretty scary stopping or around corners. New car is a Saab 9-7x Aero which is basically a Chevy Trailblazer SS. Does have the same LS2 motor - 390 hp. Fun SUV.

People here have got some real nice cars.

I don't have any photos of my other car, it's currently sitting under wraps on my parents back lawn waiting for me to have the finances, skills and patience to sort it out.

It's a 1978 Alfa Romeo Alfasud Ti.

It used to look like this:

These days, sadly, it looks more like this:

Plans are for a Bilstein/IE suspension setup, chip, 16" Rota Slipstreams(or 15" Rota RB's), Euro bumper trim, plate filler panel, and I want to swap the black interior for Cardinal Red. For now it's a nice stock daily driver.

I don't think one is available for the M20, but M50/S50 motors. They do sell AlphaN fuel tuning for M20s though. Intake and AlphaN on the S14 varies on tune. Most say the airbox alone gains 18rwhp on a stock 2.3L. All I can say is it changes the S14 to another level. I've read on such mods for M20s doing ITBs and gaining nothing. I'd spend my money elsewhere on a M10/M20 platform. Intake for the S14 in the picture (18cm runners) ran about $1400. It's a ton of dough, but a precise engineered part taking into account for the airhorns, volume, and runner length. CF doesn't allow heat transfer, so the incoming air is always cool no matter how hot the engine bay is. You would have to drive one in this configuration to really grasp the difference. Not to mention the weight is probably about 1 lb.

Oh, I'll finish it Joe, don't worry. Just finished my E24 project, just minor details to iron out now. It was a lot smaller project, so I wanted to get it done before the E21. I also have a client's 2002 to finish, and another one waiting in the wings. Those both take precedence over my own toys. I was just getting sick to death of not having a fun little 3 series to blast around in, I bought the 325is to daily drive.
