Hey guys how you all doin, hope you all had great christmas's. But dont lay down yet, we still got new years to go.

Okay so, back to the point.

http://www.wallothnesch.com/e/frameoffer.htm

Im looking at a high performance 4cyl ignition coil from this site.

Its under the electrics section for the E21.

It says: High performance ignition coil 316, 318, 320/4, 320i up to 9/80

Why would that be? Whats different in the pre 80's ignition vs the post 80's.

Cheers guys

I believe pre-'80 used points where post-'80 used electronic (stator).

I have an MSD Blaster Coil on my 80 - been on for 5 years now no problems.

Thats true, but I can't think of why the coil would be different. In any case I would think you can buy the bosch red coil semi-locally (mail order, but not across an ocean) and it is supposed to be HOT.

Points ignition uses a coil with higher resistance windings and are not interchangeable with coils intended for use with electronic ignition. Well, you COULD use a lower resistance coil intended for electronic ignition on your points system and it will work great for about 2 days and your points will be fried...

He he, about from the Oregon border back to Santa Rosa Ken. I stupidly removed the ballast resistor on a 02 when I got a new coil one time. Thinking it had the built in resistance. It didn't, Points fried between OIT in Klamath falls and SR.

When I changed my engine I went from electronic to points and kept the same coil. I did install a ballast resistor since I wasn't using any of the original wiring harness (which has one in it). I ran it that way for a year before I switched to EDIS.

So just to confirm. Say theoretically, if i were going to be running Twin DCOES and a Tii distributor, then this ignition system would be fine yes?
