View Full Version : OT: my other car
cheechthechi 12-29-2007, 07:49 PM I used to work at a hobbystore a while ago, and when I worked there all of the guys were into r/c drifting. Anyways, I finally pulled my car out of shed and snapped some pictures of it. I haven't driven it in nearly a year due to the fact that I'm cheap and always used the hobby store charger and never bought one of my own.
Right now It runs a ball differential in the front, with a locked differential in the rear, a 19- turn raven motor and a novak xrs speed control. The car started out a a nitro car (tamiya tgs) which I converted into a tt-01 (electric version). If I had money I would buy a brushless motor setup, digital servo, Spectrum dsm radio, but I have to finish off the real car and I need to start investing money into my future, so thus this car will have to be a shelf queen for awhile.

cheechthechi 12-29-2007, 08:53 PM Haha, I wanted to get the e30 m3 body but it was like 40 dollars, so i passed. Yea, it has f/r swaybars, right now set on the stiffest setting possible. These cars have about as much, if not more suspension setup options as real cars.
320ipyro 12-30-2007, 12:37 AM i thought about getting one of those bumblebee cars. then i remembered my civic i gotta fix :(

They are painted in the 1994 to 1997 BTTC scemes.
blitzed310 12-30-2007, 02:38 PM I never got the drifting R/C Car thing. I left the scene when all that came around. I used to be a factory driver for Associated Electric in both 1/8th gas trucks and 1/8th off road electric. Those were the good ol days. I miss those days, but I don’t miss the money that was spent. You can easily spend 1k on a rig, not to mention all the electronics you need for maintenance and operation.
Here are some of mine:

djminkin 12-30-2007, 02:41 PM Cool, I have a 18t with a lipo powered c4 motor. The thing is the size of a shoe and goes 70+. It usually starts breaking apart when it hits the upper 60's
Red Ribbon Army 12-30-2007, 04:31 PM damn, those are some crazy RC cars. Darryl those look legit!
blitzed310 12-30-2007, 04:33 PM Are those cars even moving? They look like they are still posing?

They are still posing - took them for our catalog pictures back in 1996. Nice looking team car CJ.
djminkin 12-30-2007, 06:51 PM Heres a couple of mine. The one on the right is a beast. Both are modified with 3 cell lipos.
Rickysbmw320i 12-30-2007, 07:25 PM ive had 3 of them. the HPI RS4. so sad i sold that. i had a HPI savage 21 And now have the savage 21 with the bigblock. love hpi! all damn good trucks!

Those rc18s are wicked, we did a rc18b for a customer with the lowest setting on the mamba and 3 cell 1320 thunder power lipo and the car had sooo much torque steer and would spin out like crazy, I bet that thing did close to 50.
Cj, good stuff you have there, looks like a rc10b2? and rc10gt, Racing is soo expensive, one of the reasons I never got into it. I couldn't justify the 500+ guys were dumping into their racecars each season (for 1/10th only.. 1/8 is another demon). The drift thing was just a fun way to hang around with the guys. One day when I'm a professional engineer I'll probably get into racing r/c's.
Our Shop owner was sponsored by team losi and was friends with alot of the pro drivers, so I got to meet some of the "famous" losi drivers.
Those Hpi trucks are awesome, the only thing I disliked about the savage was when there were tranny repairs. Our mechanic hated having to take apart the entire chassis to access the tranny.
Personally though, I think that the lst2 was the best of them all. After seeing so many in various forms in our shop, and launching them off ramps at the x games, I've never seen something beefier.

djminkin 12-31-2007, 08:59 AM THe one on the right goes over 70!!! It has a 3 cell lipo with a C4 dynamite motor. Thats basically the fastest you can make it go and getting it up to speed is very difficult without it spinning out. The problem is at those speeds, hitting a small bump or pebble makes the car actually take off into the air and on occasion wreck badly. I converted everything to aluminum, but it just makes for a more expensive repair when it wrecks.
I hit a garbage can at over 50 and the car was basically unrecognizeable afterwards it was in so many pieces.:devillook

Very true, just one weekend of racing is expensive. Fuel, multiple sets of tires, and parts that WILL break. Its an easy $150 every weekend.
I worked in a Hobbie store myself at 14-16 as a R/C Vehicle assembler. I got a whopping $20 per car, and $75 for airplanes. Thats how I got into the sport. My neighbor was Travis Amezcua, you might have heard of him he is a World ranked driver for Losi/Trinity (previously for Team Associated thats how I got my sponsor) and I learned a ton from him. This guy is still a factory driver, and can you believe he has never worked a "real" job ever since he became a factory driver at age 16 (hes 27 now). And believe me, he is not short on the cash side, they pay well.
And yes that is a Factory GT and B2/B3 hybrid. That was before the release of the B3 and there are some parts on there that were used it testing. Notice the Amezcua body on the B2, I put that on for a race in Vegas (my last one) and people were freaking out because they thought Travis was on the stand.
cheechthechi 12-31-2007, 07:09 PM Wow you knew Travis, that's pretty bada**
OLD MAN 12-31-2007, 07:30 PM So CJ - did you know Jammie of Sprit Graphitics and his sons? Did you race at MNM hobbies or the Ranch?
I have been trying to remember seeing you around the tracks - too many memories gone. Travis started racing after I had slowed way down, and started staying home more with the family.
And my partner and I had split up A&L MFG., I was on my own with Factory Works Team Parts, when MNM moved down off of the 91 and Green River.

I sort of knew them through travis. I painted all my own bodies since I was always low on cash those days. I would go through a body a month or so for each car so that added up.
I was a local at Ranch Pit Stop and MNM. I also frequented SoCal Raceway in HB. My days of hardcore gas racing fell short when Ranch closed down.
Did you know Travis's dad Conrad? He had a little gig called Rad'z Motors. He turned all are electric motors and built all our OZ gas motors. The motor in that GT you see has a poliched and knifed crank, polished rod and increased compression on the piston. Its also a Paris tuned carb with custon needles as well as some custom air filter. Those motors were serious business, and since I was a neighbor I never had to pay for anything :buttrock
