View Full Version : Dude, I need help?

Last night I was driving and my car began to lose power and began to drive very sluggishly. It began making a girgle/popping/humming noise when I would apply gas. Idle became rough too.
Power was gone, it didn't matter what gear or rpm, it felt like I was going up a hill in third gear at 1k rpm.
The sound coming from the exhaust sounded muffled, almost like the air was restricted.
Today I called my mechanic and explained the symptoms in detail, his first thought was my catalytic conv. so I had it removed and straight pipes put in it's place. This did not solve the problem.
I checked my plugs (which I changed two months ago) they were fine.
I cleaned my MAF sensor with a CRC product, I cleaned my air filter. Unplugged my battery, problem is still present.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Matt

Did it throw a CEL? I'd get it scanned by a euro speclialist shop and save yourself headache + $$$.

Any reason you changed the pump 2 months ago? Was it exhibiting some other symptom?

Peake Code #45, Knock Sensor!!!!!!!

Ding ding! Sounds like you were experiencing some bad knock!

Did you somehow get a bad fill of gas, or some 87 or something!? I don't understand what could cause SUDDEN knocking, normally it would come on slowly from carbon buildup or something.

I know 95's are more prone to knocking for some reason, so you might search around and see what people have done when they have had it happen. Maybe the sensor is just bad and it's putting you into a limp mode.

Intake bellows? I have been having a few rough idle problems and intermittent problems. I tore up my bellows by trying to remove my Mass Airflow Sensor. The bellows was rotten.

Your knock sensor is toast. New ones aren't too expensive. Check AutohausAZ

We'll get to the bottom of this! Planning on installing new Knock sensors soon.

Going to have to take it to the shop.

Aww!! Joy.

Are you still on the same tank of gas? If so, I'd recommend syphoning it out and putting new gas in ASAP.

Score! If you got some bad gas go grab some octane booster and put that in there til your next fill up.

Fixed?
What was the problem?

MreedBMWM3

not fixed. problem is the car begins to misfire severely if I don't just baby the car.

I have to barely apply the throttle for the car to run smoothly. If I give what I would call normal M3 driving it misfires and runs like shit.

Jack said he thought it could be plugs or coils. Although I've changed the plugs three months ago, and the coils in the last two years.

At this point I'm fairly frustrated, it's really anybody's guess.

Time to hit up the main E36 M3 forum methinks if you haven't already... surely some other 95 owners can help you out, I know they can be more prone to knock problems or problems that appear that way.

Dude, sorry to hear that; I like your M. Side question: where did you get the straight pipe put in?

A year ago, although I've ruled that out because the 02 sensor would throw a CEL.

One of my cats rattles like an angry snake. I'd rather get straight pipe than pay for new cats.

Eh.. I don't know how he feels about putting his name on the internet but if you need anything at all let me know first and I'll call him and see what he can do. He can't get any deals on parts either.

I just came in from pulling all the coils and spark plugs. I tested the coils with a multimeter and they are ok. I pulled each plug inspected them and they are ok.

Any clues?

Were you able to rule out bad gas (water)?
injectors?
fuel pressure?

I'm beginning to think it could be a fuel pump. I have ran through quite a few tanks of Premium Gas, 91, that's all I ever put in the M.

I added Heat, and Techron back in December when it was first having problems.

How can I test fuel pressure? How can I rule out Injectors.

Wouldn't it more likely have been the seals on the injectors prior to the actual injector going out...which would mean you would actually see fuel on the block or smell gas...if you don't see/smell the gas, then it's probably not the injectors?

Thanks.

does anyone have a compression tester?

Wasn't there someone one here that used to rebuild injectors? Maybe they would have some knowledge about the fuel system.
