View Full Version : '98 740 vs '98 M3
heifetz17 12-27-2007, 07:37 PM I came up behind a silver 4 door '98 M3 5spd last night and was playing around a little with the gas next to him. He launched hard and I went second, steadily falling back, then we caught up to each other again.
I looked over and he looked back, I was ahead by 1/4 cl and I shifted into sport mode and mashed the pedal to the floor, and he downshifted and mashed it in response. I was still ahead at first for a few seconds. We went from 35 to 80, and I went from 1/2 cl ahead to 1 1/2-2 cls behind. We pulled over a talked awhile, but it was loads of fun. I've been wanting to go against an M3, though I never expected to win! :)
jrhaile 12-27-2007, 07:40 PM I'm not surprised... 740s are beasts on the open road.. my buddy's boss has a new 745li and we rally that thing and it goes from 70mph-130mph with ease.
EDITED FOR TYPO

Do you have mods?
If no, I do believe you ran a poorly running S52

Nice runs. But you didn't win, as you said yourself: "I went from 1/2 cl ahead to 1 1/2-2 cls behind." :confused

:rofl
S52s are not very complex engines, like S62s or S54s. There are not nearly as many "poorly-running" S52s as there are the former. The 540 is a highway "beast" (relatively speaking, of course) and will take an M3 on the highway with ease. 740 is a bit more even because of its weight disadvantage.

I didn't even see that part:rofl

sure the weight is a factor but at higher speeds that isnt as much of a disadvantage where as if he was starting at 0, now that would be a joke.
They only ran up to 80 or 90 he said, how much do you expect the m3 to put on him, he put on 2 car lengths, thats impressive.

He said he won but he also said he was 1 1/2-2 CL's behind..........
I didn't see the behind part.....I saw the part where he said he won.
I already noted that a few posts up
Orxan4ik 12-27-2007, 09:36 PM I ran a slightly modded M3 (M50 manifold, exhaust, Dinan chip, lighter weight, due to other seats and no spare and some clutch << dunno what it does) from this forum, he pulled like 2 CLs from 70 and up (mine stops @ 128mph limited) At low speeds I wasnt falling that much back (I guess he lost some torque down low due to M50 manifold and freer flowing exhaust) However mine's stock with automatic and full weight AND the darn 2.81 rear end. So this story sounds true to me, and once I get something shorter (3.15 or even 3.62) in the back we will definetely re run :)
phantom3 12-27-2007, 10:53 PM :lol . Is this the special olympics racing, where everyone is a winner ?
I've never had a 740 want to play, but i expected a similar outcome. sounds like you had fun .

I'll play.
Though I'll race anything I drive
eurocar328 12-27-2007, 11:41 PM They may not be MONSTERS, but they pull good on the highway. I doubt an e36 M3 could beat a 745, and a 750 would walk away good. The e38 750/ e?? 760 are a fun ride at high speeds, and the the B7 is :rofl They be baller!!!
