Besides body style and interior what are the major differences between the two cars? I know that the e39 got a different engine which eventually got vanos but I am wondering what the overall difference was in performance as well as maintenance and reliability.

e34s have vanos.
e34s are less electronically integrated, and the last of the classic bmw sports sedans (IMO) and the first of the luxury oriented bmw... and the very last handbuilt ///M car.
e39s are nice cars especially inside but i prefer the e34.
I believe the e34 is easier to maintain yourself.

The e39 will be faster in every respect, more comfortable, and a better highway cruiser.
The e34 will be more reliable, cheaper to buy by at least $5,000, will have a more connected feel to the road, cheaper to maintain, and MUCH better life out of your tires due to the suspension setup on the e39.
With that said though, you really can't go wrong with either one. The only real way you will know which one is better for you is to go test drive a few of each, and see which YOU enjoy more.

E39 540i sport package with a 6 speed manual trans. That is the car to have if you don't want an E39 M5. IMHO, the E39 was the most reliable, and best looking vehicle out of all the 5 series vehicles.
