View Full Version : Low Beam Problem

Well I have posted this before, but I don't remember if I correctly stated all of the symptoms. I have a '91 Euro 850i from japan.

Problem: low beams don't work.

I checked the bulbs and they are fine. I check for signal/power to bulbs and there isn't any. So with the car running I turn on the lights. Lights pop up but low beams don't turn on. Fogs and highs function correctly. There is no message on the OBD, it shows "check control okay".

I think, crap, some kind of electrical or wiring problem.

I turn the car off, remove key from ignition and stand outside car. After approximately 45 seconds the low beams turn on with the headlights in the down position. The low beams seem to stay on forever (this has been the cause of two sets of batteries being replaced).

My solution has been to pull the fuses and use my fogs as low beams. I've had to deal with the "Low Beam Failure" for quite a while now and it's becoming annoying. The low beam failure has only started showing on the OBD when I removed the fuses. If I replace the fuses the OBD returns to normal and my problem returns.

Latest guess from various sources has been a problem with the LKM Module. Last time this was posted I managed to find a Euro LKM's, (hopefully he still has it if this is the problem) but I wanted to make sure before I purchased it.

Do you have a spare light swithch to check if that's the problem, I stuck a euro light switch in one of my cars and got weired results, Some lights would not work unless i used the High beam! Does your light switch have 4 pins inside or 5, I believe the 5 pin is the euro switch for rear fog lights, 4 is US.

rear fogs switch (EURO) is on the right side of the instrument cluster, low beams are in the switch on the left side of the cluster. It sounds like another LKM problem.

I see you live in canada... i live in winnipeg, i imported an 850 this summer. Did you have DRL's installed?? Im just wondering if its the wiring from the drl's thats giving you the problem.. as they are often hooked up to the low beam in a regular vehicle. They should have been wired to the parking or fog lights, but you may want to check just incase.

I did have DRL's installed with the fog lights. Yes, it did throw an error on the computer, but this is not related to a DRL module as the module has been removed since passing inspection.

Looks like LKM for me.... Does anybody have any extra euro LKM's hanging around? (cough, wuffer, cough....)

I know there was a service recall for this problem and this is the bulletin for it...Jim is sending me a LKM for my car as she reads there are bulbs out when there isn't..Your problem seems to be a little different than mine..You can email him and see if he has a LKM for your car.The dealer wants $700.00 for it..He posts here under e31parts jim@e31parts.com (ejim@e31parts.com) and he's a nice guy to deal with..I know this doesn't help you much but maybe it can steer you in the right direction.:)

P.S. Getting the windows tinted tomorrow..

Since this is a published svc bulletin, has anyone approached a dealer to see if it can be warranty like some of the MID failures?
