This just happened. I was in my 2000 M Roadster. A quite similar story happened while I was driving my Trailblazer SS, but this one is TONS better:
So I'm driving home, top down, it's about 50 and clear. Basically beautiful. I live in a Joe-Suburbia housing development. It's a 4-lane road, posted speed limit 45 mph (2 lanes each way with a grassy median in the middle). The kicker is that there are several four-way stops, spaced about 1/4-mile apart.
Anyhow, I'm driving in my usual speedy manner; no ill intent (I just like to drive fast). Well, I catch up to an S4 Audi, blue. He's got the V8 because I can hear it. He acts cool and sips on his milkshake when I get beside him (I even pull a little ahead of him so he has to see me). He won't look over. Fine. I'll get him at the next 4-way stop. But at the stop sign an SUV delays the works. The S4 could have waited but instead, rips on out of there before I even come to a stop (sort of like a pre-mature ricer flyby).
Well, comes the last stop sign and the road necks down to one lane each way (in about 2-300 feet). There is no question as to what happens to the road as there is a big yellow sign and a massive red-and-white striped fence about 6 feet high and 15-feet wide blocking the right lane when it ends.
There are a few cars backed up at this neck-down stop sign. I zip past the Audi and give him the thumbs down for not going for it at the previous stop sign. Well, this gets his undivided attention, so he changes lanes to line up.
But as I mentioned, the road necks down. He makes a tactical error: he picks the right lane, which is the lane that ends...
We come to a stop at the same moment this time, and both nail it. I get an excellent hard launch. Of course he does--he's got Quattro!
Now, I don't know the general public's view on this matter, but in my opinion, if you're in the lane that ends soon, you'd better well have a car that is dominatingly fast, or be prepared to face reality and ease in behind the guy whose lane doesn't end.
The driver of the S4, however, was of a different opinion. I guess he thought his car was so bad a$$ that he could easily overtake me in short order. But we hung DEAD EVEN.
He does not, in fact, pass me. He must therefore, NAIL his brakes and then get over when I'm clear. Not only that, but he runs over a curb because he waits too long to hit his brakes.
I thought that'd be the end of it, but no, he keeps on the gas and gets right on my ass. I turn into the next neighborhood, and he flips me off. Classic! :buttrock Like I forced him to do all that stupid driving! I return the salute and hope he comes for an out-of-car discussion on the matter, but he tears off down the road.
