I'm sure all of you have heard that cars have blind spots. There is even a healthy market of stick on, pop on, and replacement mirrors to remove this nagging and dangerous problem. But what if I told you that there is a DIY on removing your blindspot that takes 30 seconds and costs zero dollars?
There are two ways to remove your blind spot, one needs the help of a friend, one you can do by yourself.
When you and a buddy have some extra time go to your car.
1. Make sure your seat is adjusted to how you normally drive it (hopefully so that your wrist breaks on the top of the steering wheel while your shoulder is back in the seat, or close to).
2.Have your friend stand arm's length away from your rear quarter panel, where a car would be in the lane next to you.
3. Adjust your mirror so you can see his/her body in the mirror. NOT HIS HEAD but his body, where the body of another car would be.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 with the other mirror
5. Starting at one side mirror, have your friend walk all the way around the car at arm's length away. Your view should move from peripheral to side mirror, to rear view mirror, to side mirror and back to peripheral with no overlap. If you ever lose him adjust so you can see him again. Voila, no blind spot!
If you are all alone, someone else adjusted your seat/mirrors or you are in a new car here is how you can do this by your loansome.
1. After adjusting the seat press your head against the driver's side window
2. Adjust your mirror so you can barely see the side of your car.
3. Move your head into the middle of the car (in front of your rear view mirror) and adjust your passenger side mirror so that you can just barely see the side of your car.
Since you are without friend this may take a little bit more trial and error on the road. But once it is perfect, what do you know, no blind spot!
You need to give this a little bit of time to get used to it. It will seem very foreign to you at first, but I assure you: the back of your car is going exactly where the front of the car is, no one will steal your gas cap at 70mph, and you can look out the front if you want to see where the lines are.
