So the M5 has a bubble in the mirror. It doesn't dim and doesn't work well as a mirror. The only purpose for it now is to flash a red light.
In searching the interweb, I found out the chemicals are incredibly caustic and are not compatible with human life. One of the chemicals contains mercury. If the mirror actually starts to leak, it will destroy whatever it touches. It could seep into cracks and carpet and continually leak toxic fumes.
My warranty expired. Replacement mirrors were around $300 - $800, the higher end reflecting the stock oval mirror (no longer manufactured).
The manufacturer of these mirrors is Magna Donnelly. There is no recall on this mirror and you have no recourse.
However, "[a]s a pro bono goodwill gesture, [Magna Donnelly] can assist you in getting a replacement mirror", states Dani Andriacchi, who works in the Office of Technology for Magna Donnelly.
If your mirror was made by Magna Donnelly, e-mail Dani at dani.andriacchi at magnadon dot com and start the claims process.
I e-mailed her on 17 December, heard back from her within minutes, filed the claim the next day (requires picture of the mirror), received item today (21 December -- 3 days after filing the claim). After installing my new mirror, I'll need to return the old mirror back to Magna Donnelly. Shipping is free. Mirror is free.
Very good, fast service.
