I am New to BMW as this was the first I could afford, I bought a car that sucked water into the engine and blew the motor, tried to compress water and found out it doesn't anyways, I bought the 1995 bmw 740i and put in a new used motor, however the old throttle body was put in. the car drives great, except for the fact that the tranny does not shift out of first gear when you drive in D, I have to slide the A-M lever so that it is manual, and it shifts fine, though there is no 1st gear, and it thinks D is 4th.

I took it to a dealer and they plugged it in to read codes for me and said there were none, just that there was a comm error and there was no signal from the load sensor to the tranny for it to know when to shift. he said there wqas not a throttle body pos sensor error and that there is where he would look first, the throttle body is hooked up however, I was wondering if anyone would have the impedance readings for the two sensors that are on the throttle body, as maybe they were fried when the water was sucked in, and/or any other advice you may have as per where to look, it is dying when it is cold as well, whenI push the throttle and then let it rest, it dies -I have heard this may be the gasket beteen the throttle body and intake...

thank you very much...

Gabriel

welcome! man, was gasping for breath reading your post (was hoping for more PERIODs). :)

May I suggest contacting Mr. Koeller..the ZF tranny guru: http://www.autosportsunlimited.com/

The MAF sensor is used to determine engine load. The MAF tells the TCM when AND how hard to shift the transmission. Check that first, make sure that the intake isn't leaking between the MAF and the throttle body. I can't find any resistance specs for the TPS or the MAF on mitchell1. another thing that goes bad is the transmission range senor, it lets the TCM know where you have the shifter lever. I'm not 100% sure but I think on the E38 the shifter is the range sensor.

Is your ABS light on too? how is the idle when it is warm?
Double check that your electrical connectors are on the right throttle valve switch.

Idle when it is warm is like 900 only 500 when it is cold, dies when it is cold after you give it any gas unless you baby it and tap it, there is no ABS light on, what does that stand for, the light that is on is an Exclamation point with a circle around it.
