Hi guys,

Here is my story:

I just purchased a black on black 01 740i w/the M Sport Pkg. Nice car.

The second day I had it the engine died while driving around 60 mph / I attempted to pass a car on the freeway and the engine just died - the DSC light came on - when it almost reached a complete stop it vibrated/coughed until it was in Park - I waited a few minutes and the car ran fine.

Next Day = Same thing
So I replace the MAF - WOW it gave it more horsepower it ran great -

BUT WAIT!!

A few days later it died again, going up the hills here in northern California at about 30mph - same thing it died but it did not coughed so much. It died 2 more times until I made it back home.

Went to the mechanic - NO CODES - So I told them to replace the Camshaft positioning sensor 2 days ago - again WOW what a difference, now I runs really really smooth - very nice, like new. I figured I fixed it.

But it died again last night while driving around 80mph, I passed another car and I accelerated a bit hard - it died but really smooth, it just died,
DSC light came on again / I pulled over - turned it off and back on and it's running fine. I just afraid to accelarate and kill engine again in the middle of the freeway - very dangerous.

So, I replaced the MAF and Camshaft Sensor - it runs much better but still dies out of nowhere - ANY CLUES?? Please

Thanks in advance,

Rudy

I'd be looking at fuel too - coil would have to be all 8 of them going down at the same time wouldn't it?

Having said that you haven't got any aftermarket alarms or imobilisers fitted have you? Had something similar with a car a while back and that was an aftermarket alarm cooking it self and cutting the fuel pump feed!!

Thank you both for the input - No, I havent installed any aftermarket anything -

I just drove it 35 miles on the freeway and it runs fine - I will check into the fuel pump and filters.
Thanks again,

If it were me, the first thing I would do is take it to the dealer and have them flash (update) the transmission software.

If the fuel filter was clogged, then you would also have slow acceleration from stand-still. It wouldn't be a bad idea to change the fuel filter, but that's not what's causing your problem.

Ignition coils, when going bad, will fail when they get hot, but will work well when they are cold. But they would work just as bad, if not worse, when idling. So I don't think it's those either; however, it doesn't mean that you should overlook them.

Good luck.

I'm struggling with that suggestion - if the engine is cutting out how would flashing the tanny software help but I'm happy to learn

Ahh I have known fuel pick up pipes suffer from debris collection untill the fuel supply is starved and the engine cuts out - without the suction effect the debris drops off the pick up pipe filter and the engine restarts

I've seen the same thing with collapsed exhaust silencers same effect from a different end.

How do you clear/clean the fuel pick up pipes? fuel injector cleaners?
