View Full Version : any drawback to using Rain-X @ the track?... dieselm3 04-09-2003, 10:16 PM I'm going to a DE at NHIS on friday and there might be rain, I'm thinking rain-x may be helpful?? any thoughts? Thanks John '95M3 118k miles nick325xit 5spd 04-09-2003, 11:35 PM It makes the wiper blades chatter. Nice initially, but then it gets annoying. John V 04-10-2003, 07:20 AM Can't comment on track use, but I've used it for years on many cars with excellent results. I've never had any problems with wipers chattering but I've only had occasion to test up to ~95MPH. Then again, I can't remember the last time I used my wipers at any speed over 20MPH... John V B.Watts 04-10-2003, 09:39 AM Rain-X is the best investment you can make for track driving in the rain. Outside of a monsoon, I usually don't even have to turn the wipers on at speed. The rain usually just runs right off. The chattering is usually caused be overuse of wipers. It's seems that most drivers tend to always have their wipers on faster than they need to be, or they leave them on for a perriod of time after they are no longer needed. When this occurs, the wipers lose their lubrication and begin to transfer rubber onto the glass. When the wipers are used next, the rubber on the glass grips the wiper blades and causes the chattering. Worn wipers tend to transfer rubber more than new ones. If anything, Rain-X provides better lubrication and limits the problem. Try using some WD-40 on the spots of your windshield that chatter to break down the rubber. Once the rubber is gone, you'll have to wash multiple times with window cleaner to remove the oil/grease from the WD-40. I'm sure there's something better than WD-40, but that's what we use to take rubber off the paint on our racecars (noted, one shouldn't use WD-40 on the paint of their street car!!!) nick325xit 5spd 04-10-2003, 10:53 AM Originally posted by BMWRacerITS Rain-X is the best investment you can make for track driving in the rain. The wiper chattering went away after I stopped using Rain-X. :P And it never happened before then. B.Watts 04-10-2003, 01:09 PM That's strange, but I still stand by my original argument. Heck, Rain-X never really goes away anyway. The water still ran off the windshield on my race car a year after I initially put it on. Perhaps the chattering simply went away because you washed the rubber off the windshield? I can't imagine in any circumstance how something that makes the surface of your windshield slicker would cause your wipers to chatter. Chatter is caused by the blade sticking to the windshield in every case I've seen. As for the original question, try some Rain-x out. You probably won't need your wipers anyway, so no worries about chatter. :) John V 04-10-2003, 02:35 PM Agreed. Wipers are sooo 1980. John As for the original question, try some Rain-x out. I'm sure you can get it elsewhere. No, it won't leave any marks. Really makes a difference. Gene V 04-11-2003, 06:50 PM you should be okay as long as you don't use it on your tires!!! |
