View Full Version : 2000 Camaro SS vs. E39 540IA
well like the title says... both were my cars, i was in the SS my buddy drove the 5... went out onto the local expressway first run was 60-200 (kph)... camaro pulls roughly 5-6 cars.. second run...80-160.. same outcome.. for some weird ass reason the 5 always got the jump... but the camaro would reel it back almost instantly... i guess better throttle response on the 5er.. we then decided to see how the cars performed from a dig... so we found a nice long stretch of deserted road and line up... 3 honks.. camaro spins like a mofo off the line... i got a 3500 Stall but i only took it up to 3G and my tires are bald as hell... 5er took the lead 2 cars ahead but by the time we got to 130-140 camaro reeled it in and took it by 200...
all in all fun few races.. i always wanted to see how my cars would wage against one another... even though it was obvious that the SS would win.. i still wanted to see how the 5er would fare.
mods on the SS:
intake
exhaust
exhaust cut out (i was running open in all the races)
3500 Yank stall converter
car has also been lowered and brakes have been upgraded
Frogger 12-20-2007, 10:52 AM LOL, you were driving a 13-second car balls out with bald tires? Props for 1- attempting it, 2- beating a reasonably-quick car and 3- not dying.
Seriously though, do it again and video tape it; sounds like a great time.

Ill have to make sure i tape it next time... too bad im here in Canada and we are just buried in snow... :( already put the SS away.

Always had a soft spot for LS1 SS Camaro's.
savage217 12-20-2007, 11:49 AM I was confused for a second but then realized it was km/h. Id like to see how you would have done against a 540/6.

540/6 probably wouldnt have fared any better.. maybe a couple car lengths less.. if that keep in mind the highway runs probably wouldnt have been much different between the autotragic and the manual... the 540/6 probably would eat me alive out of the hole right now... but back when i had stickies (and by that i mean DRs not slicks lol) the best 60' i could cut was a 1.6 the stall helps out sooo much.. it was honestly the best 500 bux i ever spent.

I've got a 98 540i6 - in the toronto area. I'd be willing to give it a try in the spring.... although everyone already knows it won't be pretty for the 5er....
88gta 12-20-2007, 01:20 PM nice runs!
jworms 12-20-2007, 01:40 PM phew, for a second i thought you were going to post about a 540 beating an LS1 powered camaro SS :rolleyes.
good race, good kill

Nice SS, btw.
Deuuuce 12-20-2007, 02:09 PM Nice runs. How much different vs. a 6M 540? That C&D 0-150mph test the 540 6M beat it due to gearing but the 1/4 mile was all SS.
slickav 12-20-2007, 03:16 PM I would LOVE to have a black (tinted) on black with stock black wheels in my garage.
Tune, cam, headers, exhaust and a stall converter... I'm set.

Blad tires wouldnt make a difference. Tread is used mostly for displacing water. Its the tire compound and how much hits the ground that make a difference.

8/98. Seconds to 150mph:
Acura NSX 6M 28.2sec
BMW 540 Sport 6M 34.7 sec
Z28 SS 36.0 sec
Vette 30.2
Viper GTS 22.5
Jag XJR 34.8
911 38.2
The SS has a drag cd of .34, larger frontal area, and smaller tires meant an EARLIER shift to 5th gear than the Vette. The Vette had to shift to 5th at 134mph.

I know the magazine did the test but it just seems so odd that it would pull the ss to 150. The ss would probably run a low 13 and the 540 probably in the upper 13s. Now the 540 is going to make up this time after the ss shifts to 5th and beat it by 1.3 seconds? Its almost like saying the bimmer is 1-2 faster between 135 and 150. Its just hard to believe I guess, even if the ss has an overdrive gear used.
If anyone here raced an ls1 with their 540/6, would you expect the bimmer to win a race on the highway?

The 540 is a 14-second-flat car stock; it being faster than the SS probably had something to do with the driver and conditions at the time.
I think the LS1 would take the 540i/6, period.
well us A4 guys know that our top end sux thats why we'll usually have races from digs/10mph where we know we can get ya... lol i imagine the M6 would fare a lot better vs the 540i/6... the LS1 has such greater pull up top compared to the M62

That 540i also trapped 103mph in the 1/4mile in that test, so it was a healthy one. The acceleration curve they posted in that test showed the SS dropped alot more than the 540i's when it went into 5th gear whereas the 540i's curve barely slowed down when it went into 5th gear. The drop in the rate of acceleration is greater in the SS than the 540i after 120mph which would indication that the 540i is slowing the lengths the SS pulled prior to 120mph. The SS is still still pulling lengths since it has a greater time-to-speed after that terminal velocity. The two's acceleration rate eventually evened out near 140mph where the 540i's time to speed was less after that.
But just because the 540i's time-to-speed was lower doesn't mean its time-to-distance was lower. By 150mph in an all-out race 0-150mph, the SS is already bus lengths ahead by the time both have reached a velocity of 140mph (where they even out in the rate of acceleration), the 540i is now just traveling at a quicker, therefore, faster rate and just begining to reel the SS which is probably just two small taillights off in the horizon.
It should also be noted that in the 540i 6speed's acceleration curve in the comparision test, the drop in rate in acceleration in 3rd, 4th, and 5th gears was mininal.
So according to that test, the only way a 540i would stand any type of chance is if you have a really healthy running 540i 6speed and the race starts at 120mph LOL even then it would be a fat chance IMHO

Just a lid, eh? :redspotyep thats all thats in there for now... lookin to get a LS6 Mani sometime this winter as well as a larger TB.. i hear the 90mm's are the way to go.. otherwise aside from that exhaust, suspension, brakes cutout, and stall im pretty much a stocker.
I was so glad I did the suspension... if you havent yet.. look into it.. i used to bounce off the line so bad... not anymore.

90 MM intakes are the way to go IF YOU HAVE A HEADS/CAM.
Just an observation. If you're not pulling the flow of something other than bolt ons, you lose intake velocity and power.

Admittedly our car has a few extra's that aren't supposed to be there.
Although I do hate the fact that a 1/4 of the engine is under the cowl and dashboard... talk about making things difficult to get to. :(
