I need the opinion of any of you who live or have experience in the DC area. I will be attending Georgetown medical school starting in August, so I will be moving up there sometime this summer.
I really love my BMW, and would like to keep her for transportation while in school, but I don't know the practicality of doing so. Since I will be on a tight budget I won't be able to afford the nicest place to live and some people have told me it would not be safe for a BMW. What do you guys think? Would it be wiser to just sell the car and buy a more low profile vehicle while in school?

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

The GT area is relatively safe, but I still wouldn't trust my car parked outside every night.

Your best bet is to leave your car or to sell it and then get a nice place here (apts and condos are pricey around here) and then get a car later on.

OR

You can find a place that offers covered or garage parking, then that might be cool...

Wait until you see M Street with all that nasty metal covering the roads. The construction is nasty. Very bad for rims. I lived in GT with my BMW, but I had a private and secluded parking spot away from all the crappola. If you don't have a garage or reserved parking, say bye-bye to your bumpers because parallel parking will kill them. Also, say hello to door dings galore because people won't give two craps about opening their car door into your precious BMW.

Just giving you a heads up.

DC is fine if you're not commuting every day.
I wouldn't leave a nice car parked on the street every day... too many door dings.
just get a monthly membership at a garage ~$200.

Dude, most of the time you have no choice in the matter. Parking is so rare in that area. You're lucky to even secure garage parking. There's usually a waiting list for a spot. I had to pay off someone to move to the top of the waiting list.

I lived in GT for 5 years.

Yeah, parking is a b*tch here...and it usually cost an arm and a leg once you do get a spot in a garage....

I leave my car at home and walk my ass (and take the metro) from place to place :az:

...you'd be better off buying a beater (civic, echo, etc)

Your front and rear bumpers will be destroyed with late night drunkards trying to get out of their tight parking spot. Don't ask how I know this. Whenever I go to G-Town I don't drive my BMW, I drive my truck or beater Porsche. Porsche has big enough bumpers in the front and rear. Sell the BMW and get yourself a nice beater car if you even need a car. Metro is good and cab rides are cheap if you know how to jive with the cabbies.

Good luck!
